Summary
Security Officer
The Security Officer provides a safe and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors by monitoring facilities, enforcing policies, and responding to incidents. This role plays a critical part in preventing safety risks and ensuring a secure healthcare environment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required
- Maryland resident
- Individuals eligible for the Maryland Service Year Program (generally ages 18–24)
- Experience: Minimum six months of security experience preferred
- Licensure/Certification:
- Maryland Security Guard Card (or ability to obtain within 90 days)
- Current BLS (CPR) certification required
- De-escalation training required within 90 days
- Valid driver's license required for certain duties
- Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of security or law enforcement practices
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations
- Observation and problem-solving skills
What You'll Do
- Conduct interior and exterior patrols of facilities and grounds
- Monitor entrances, parking areas, and key security posts
- Respond to incidents and ensure safety of patients, staff, and visitors
- Maintain security presence in high-risk areas (e.g., Emergency Department)
- Provide directions and assistance to visitors and patients
- Document security activities and incidents
- Enforce policies related to safety, parking, and access control
What the Job is Really Like
- You'll spend much of your time walking, observing, and monitoring environments
- The role requires constant awareness and attention to surroundings
- Some situations may involve conflict, stress, or emergencies
- You must remain calm and professional under pressure
- The job includes both routine patrols and unpredictable situations
- Strong customer service is important—you'll regularly assist visitors
Work Environment & Demands
- Hospital campus with indoor and outdoor responsibilities
- Frequent walking, standing, and patrol activities (see physical demands on page 2)
- Exposure to various environments, including emergency and behavioral health areas
- Requires sustained alertness and quick decision-making
- Combination of independent work and team coordination

- Documentation is accurate and complete
- Visitors and staff feel supported and safe
