Description

The Job

The Department of Public Health is recruiting for Communicable Disease Investigators who will interview individuals, gain compliance with public health laws and investigate sources of communicable diseases. Communicable Disease Investigators interview patients who have communicable diseases to identify the source of the disease; coordinate with private and public medical authorities with respect to diagnosis and treatment of individual cases of communicable diseases; counsel patients regarding the symptoms and effects of communicable diseases, such as hepatitis, salmonella, meningitis, tuberculosis, sexually transmitted diseases, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); provide a range of informational and educational services in a communicable disease control program; report cases to the State via their online database; may be assigned at a health center or community agency to support STI/HIV screening services including follow up on patients with positive test results to provide appropriate referral services.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Travel/License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.

Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation which includes verification of employment history and education, fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening .

Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require Visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future. Candidates must be able to present their legal right to work in the United States at the time of employment.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must qualify under one (1) of the following options:

Option A: Possession of a current California Vocational Nurse (LVN) license - AND - One (1) year experience as an LVN. You must indicate license number and expiration date on the application.

Option B:
Thirty (30) semester (45 quarter) units of completed college coursework in health science, public health, epidemiology, or social work. A list of coursework must be submitted with the application, if you do not possess a bachelor's degree or higher in one of the required fields of study.

Option C: Six (6) months of experience interviewing patients and conducting investigations regarding communicable diseases in a public health department.

Desired Qualifications

Candidates possessing a current State of California Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT-2) license from the California Department of Public Health or LVNs that possess the Intravenous Therapy and Blood Withdrawal certifications are strongly encouraged to apply. S trong computer skills, such as fluency in navigating the internet and using Microsoft Office programs (e.g., Word, Excel, etc.) are highly desired.

Applicants fluent in Spanish are strongly encouraged to apply. Additional compensation may be associated with positions requiring the use of bilingual skills. Testing of bilingual skills may be required to receive additional compensation.
