GENERAL DESCRIPTION :
Under the management of the "disCARD" project team and supervision of field office staff, this is a grant-funded position that will perform routine to complex (journey-level) fish and wildlife conservation work. Assists in the study of reef-fish discards on the coast of Texas. Assists the in collection, recording, and editing of fishery-dependent data in the Galveston, San Antonio, or Lower Laguna Madre Bay ecosystems. Primary role will be conducting pre-fishing trip surveys at ramps early in the day and distributing physical cards for anglers to submit electronically. Responsible for entering data and performing QA/QC. Participates in local outreach events to promote the project. Operates equipment safely. Maintains gear, equipment, and facility. Performs additional duties as assigned, including occasional resource sampling from a boat. Provides training for less experienced team members. Complies with all Agency, Division, and Branch policies, procedures and standards.

Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Education :
Graduation from high school or GED.
Experience :
Fish and Wildlife Technician IA - No experience required.
Fish and Wildlife Technician IB - Two years of relevant experience.
Fish and Wildlife Technician II - Four years of relevant experience.
Licensure :
Must possess or be able to obtain, within thirty days of employment, a valid class "C" Texas driver's license.
NOTE: Retention of position is contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license
ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS :
Experience :
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Fisheries Biology, Marine Biology, or closely related field may be substituted for two years of required experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
Experience :
Two years of relevant experience.
Experience collecting and recording fishery data, particularly fishery-dependent data.
Experience working early morning hours.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :
Fish and Wildlife Technician I Knowledge of common Texas marine and estuarine organisms.
Knowledge of Texas commercial and recreational fisheries.
Knowledge of Texas coastal ecosystems.
Fish and Wildlife Technician II Knowledge of Fish and Wildlife Technician I; PLUS:
Knowledge of basic fishery management practices, conservation laws, and regulations.
Fish and Wildlife Technician I Skill in effective verbal and written communication.

WORKING CONDITIONS :
Required to work hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with days off other than Saturday, Sunday and holidays as needed.
Required to travel 30% with possible overnight stays.
May be required to operate a state vehicle.
Required to work shifts longer than 8 hours as necessary.
Required to perform work in water-based field activities, including work aboard seagoing vessels in the inshore bays and nearshore Gulf of America.
Required to perform work outdoors in extreme temperatures and occasionally adverse weather conditions.
Required to wade in water and deep mud, and walk over rough, uneven, and slippery surfaces or bay bottoms.
Required to lift, push, and pull heavy objects.
Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures.
Non-smoking environment in all state buildings and vehicles.
