DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:The Music Program offers a wide range of performing and learning experiences, housed in a specifically designed Arts Building that encourages a conservatory atmosphere. The Music Program provides educational opportunities designed to meet the needs of students who wish to explore and expand their knowledge, performance skills, and appreciation of music. This is fulfilled through a program that includes applied and group music instruction, vocal and instrumental ensembles, theory and musicianship, technology, recording arts, appreciation, and history. The curriculum is intended to serve music majors, general education transfer students, vocationally oriented students, and the community.

POSITION DUTIES:Under supervision of the Dean of Instruction, the Music Instructor will develop, prepare, and teach courses for Music majors as well as general education majors, including lower-division theory and musicianship, applied music lessons, ensembles, keyboard, and history/appreciation courses based on the candidate's particular strengths and interests as well as on the needs of the music department. The college is particularly seeking a candidate to serve as the lead faculty member for the music theory and musicianship sequence.
Ideal candidates will possess the competence and energy required to build a vibrant music program; contribute to department initiatives; and provide direction, organization, and outreach/recruitment for the long-range development and community engagement of the Music Program. The instructor will contribute to the planning and coordination of a growing music program, balancing general education with courses for majors, ensembles, and applied instruction.
In addition to the representative duties below, the specific position is also responsible for:
- Teach multiple levels of classes for music majors which may include music theory and musicianship, large and small ensembles, piano, applied lessons, and composition.
- Teach general education music courses such as music appreciation and music history.
- Use a variety of methodologies and modes of instruction, including the use of a learning management system to provide online course content and interactions/communications with students.
- Organize, supervise and direct musical performances; evaluating the performance of students engaged in the study of music; and other related work as required.
- Organize and host public musical performances.
- Participate in faculty recitals, student performances, and campus events.
- Teach assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, online or off-campus, and large group instruction classes as needed.
- Design and teach the lower division music theory and musicianship sequence.
- Teach applied music lessons.
- Design and deliver lessons and presentations that effectively use a variety of teaching techniques, including active learning and culturally responsive teaching.
- Conduct major and/or specialized ensembles, teaching both technique and musicianship to a variety of levels and abilities.
- Advise and coach music majors interested in transferring to the university level; and serve as liaison to university-level programs.
- Communicate effectively with students, colleagues and staff, including with populations who have been historically marginalized in education.
- Work collaboratively within the department and institution to support the needs of the music program, participating in curriculum development, program review, and in the review and assessment of student learning outcomes and course success rates disaggregated by race/ethnicity and other key demographics to ensure the success of all students.
- Collaborate with other departments and college staff to recruit students to the Music Program.
- Participate in campus governance, faculty organizations, and committees.
- Participate in one’s own professional development as an integral component of the position’s regular responsibilities.
- Maintain standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.
- Maintain effective relationships with students, peers, staff, and the public.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:- Master’s in music; OR
- Bachelor’s in music AND Master’s in humanities; OR
- Possession of a current California Community College Credential that permits full-time service as an instructor in the applicable discipline; OR
- The equivalent (Applicants wishing to be considered for employment under District equivalency standards must submit a detailed statement explaining how you possess the equivalent to the minimum qualifications discussed above.)

- Culturally responsive pedagogical techniques and effective practices for engaging students who are historically underrepresented and underserved in traditional classrooms.
- Ability to fairly and effectively evaluate student progress while skillfully addressing issues of equity in the classroom, including handling cross-cultural situations with sensitivity and compassion.
- Knowledge of current assessment methods and materials; and motivation and evaluation techniques for student progress.
- Experience working with students of great diversity in socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background, including those with different levels of academic preparation, and varying physical and learning abilities.
- Experience with educational technology, including online instruction, such as Canvas or Blackboard, etc.
- Experience in the development and/or review of courses and curriculum.
- Knowledge of the community college system, its mission, and goals.
- Perform as an instrumentalist and/or vocalist at a professional level, with experience as a soloist and ensemble member.
- Ability to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support students.
