Overview

The Breastfeeding Counselor educates and establishes breastfeeding as the natural and optimal way to breastfeed infants. This position provides optimal support to breastfeeding participants and to increase breastfeeding rates.

Responsibilities

• Provides information on breastfeeding by serving as a peer counselor, distributing breastfeeding information, issuing breast pumps, providing information materials and completing records and forms for department use

• Assists and resolves issues with breastfeeding

• Gives resources and reference material to support successful breastfeeding infants

• Trains on issuance, transfers, destruction, documentation, and troubleshooting for breastfeeding equipment and breastfeeding aids

• Teaches mothers how to assemble and properly care for the breastfeeding aids and pumps. Completing client documentation for breastfeeding pumps and aids

• Provides breastfeeding service for our WIC clientele with a series of breastfeeding materials to enhance the level of breastfeeding satisfaction

• Maintains professional internal and external customer service in the clinic setting, outreach or other state, city or community set environments

• Accounts for breastfeeding pumps and aids checked weekly

• Follows up calls to nursing mothers who have a loaned breast pump from the WIC program

• Reports and records all broken, damaged and non-retrievable pumps to the state agency or manufacture

• Codes, records or changes food package codes to meet the needs of the nursing mother according to our WIC state guidelines

• Provides WIC approved materials to promote breastfeeding benefits for the mothers and babies in our community

• Gives support and referrals to the families in our community

• Trains and maintains personal training as JCS Command and other first responder trainings

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

• Non-Exempt - Full-Time - Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm

• Must be available to work additional hours as needed

• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement

• In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED

• No prior experience required

• Current or past WIC breastfeeding participant

Licenses and Certifications

Required

• A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hiring

Basis of Rating

A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview
