Position Description
Under supervision, Commercial Building Inspectors examine, evaluate, and approve building construction, electrical, plumbing and mechanical installations in residential, commercial and industrial buildings in accordance with applicable building regulations and codes, and whose plans and specifications require the signature of a professional licensed by the State of California. Commercial Building Inspectors also provide consulting services to architects, engineers, designers, contractors, and owners.
This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy some autonomy in their work, but are efficient and effective in a team environment and who find fulfillment in assisting others with identifying and resolving problems.
This work section is fast-paced and requires strong customer service skills as interaction with the public and contractors is a vital part of normal duties.
One vacancy exists in the Planning and Development Department. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.
The Requirements
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination and does not assure a place on the eligibility list.
Experience:
Three (3) years of journey level trades experience as a contractor (with electrical, plumbing, or mechanical emphasis); OR three (3) years of journey level trades experience as an electrician, plumber, or air conditioning mechanic installer involved in commercial or industrial construction;
-AND-
Education:
Completion of thirty (30) units from an accredited college or university with major course work in one of the following: Construction technology, architectural drafting, industrial technology, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering, engineering technology or closely related field.
Additional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Qualifying experience with an emphasis in Electrical Systems is strongly preferred.
Certification as a Commercial Combination Inspector or a Combination Inspector is desirable.

Possession of a valid California Driver's License is required at time of appointment. Candidates considered for hire must provide proof of a valid driver's license and current copy of their driving record.
Additional Requirements
Incumbents selected after January 1, 1994 must acquire certification from the International Code Council or International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials as a Certified Commercial Building, Commercial Electrical, Commercial Plumbing or Commercial Mechanical Inspector during the first two years of employment and maintain the required certificate for the entire term of employment in this job classification.

Selection Process
The examination process may consist of the following:
Application review - Qualifying Only: Applications which meet the minimum qualifications will be reviewed and a limited number of the most qualified candidates will be invited to the Oral Examination. Selection of the most qualified candidates will be based upon those applications demonstrating the greatest breadth and depth of applicable education, experience, skills and training. Therefore, applicants are urged to submit sufficiently detailed information in their application materials for evaluation.
Oral Exam: 100%: A panel of subject matter experts will conduct a job-related oral examination to evaluate a candidate's knowledge of: General electrical and building code knowledge, experience and education, customer service and specific electrical code applications. Specifications, codes, ordinances, regulations, and practices used in the design and installation of electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems in residential, commercial, and industrial occupancies and accessory structures, interpreting construction plans and specifications, conducting inspections and detecting substandard work and materials, issuing notices and enforcing regulations, interpersonal and customer relations, computer software and reporting skills.
Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list.
The oral examination has been tentatively scheduled for the week March 23, 2026.
Veteran Preference Regulations
Candidates applying for veteran's preference are required to submit a copy of their DD214 with their application during the specified filing period. Evidence must be presented to indicate that the candidate was discharged honorably from the military service. Veterans, including City employees, must resubmit proof of honorable service for every examination for which veteran's preference credit is requested. Qualified veterans who pass the examination will have five (5) points added to their final score.
