GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

Position is with the Archeological Services Team based in Austin, Texas. Position will require travel across the State to complete surveys, site testing, data recovery and monitoring to support State Parks development and visitor experiences and maintaining compliance with the State Antiquities Code and, where applicable, federal preservation laws.

Under the direction of the Archeological Services Team Lead, this position performs highly complex (senior-level) archeological, research, and cultural resource management work. Duties for this position include but are not limited to: archeological field reconnaissance survey, pedestrian surveys with shovel testing, archeological site testing, archeological data recovery and excavation, and monitoring of construction and development activities for potential archeological deposits. Conducts field investigations as a crew member under the direction of the Archeological Services Team Lead, Principal Investigator, Project Archaeologist, or Regional Cultural Resources Coordinator. Responsibilities include conducting fieldwork in accordance with State of Texas and National standards, conducting archival research, preparing and writing technical reports to Council of Texas Archeologists (CTA) standards, operating a Global Positioning System (GPS) device and program in field for data collection, utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for map production and analysis as needed, and various types of artifact analyses and documentation. Ability to write technical archeological reports to appropriate professional standards (Antiquities Code of Texas and CTA). Presents archeological outreach activities to the public as well as presenting at professional meetings. May supervise the work of archeological crew as a Project Archeologist. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for use of initiative and independent judgement. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.



Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Education :

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelors degree in Anthropology, Archeology or closely related degree.

Experience :

Two years of progressively responsible experience in archeological fieldwork, including analyzing artifacts or data to contribute towards preparation of archeological reports (writing report, presenting results with figures, tables and maps).

Licensure :

Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid Texas class "C" driver's license.

NOTE: Retention of position is contingent on maintaining license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

Experience :

Four years of progressively responsible archeological experience in fieldwork and writing reports.

Experience in working with all terrain vehicles, driving and working with trailers.

Experience in recording above ground structures and features, particularly buildings.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :

Knowledge of archeological field data collection techniques, archeological materials and tools, and laboratory procedures.

Knowledge of Texas prehistoric and historic archeology, gained through academic training and/or field experience.

Knowledge of prehistoric and historic material culture and how to evaluate sites based on evidence.

Knowledge of the Council of Texas Archeology Standards for Archeological Survey and Performance Standards for Fieldwork and Analysis.

Knowledge of computers, word processing, and spreadsheet software.

Knowledge of GPS data collection and GIS software and data processing (Map making, data analyses).

Skill in archeological site identification and testing projects, and archeological field recording.

Skill in completing analyses and studies using GIS maps and databases.

Skill in technical writing and editing.

Skill in effective verbal and written communication to different audiences.

Ability to work under limited supervision with considerable latitude for use of initiative and accomplish several tasks simultaneously.

Ability to coordinate and occasionally supervise the work of others.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

WORKING CONDITIONS :

May be required to work outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions.

May be required to work hours other than 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday (10 day work periods).

Required to travel up to 30% with possible overnight stays.

Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures.

Required to operate a State vehicle.

Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
