7 Month Laborer Forestry Division
Description
Distinguishing Features of the ClassThe 7 Month Laborer position in the Forestry Division is primarily responsible for watering and supporting the establishment of newly planted trees within designated urban areas. Duties include transporting and applying water, monitoring soil moisture, and performing basic tree and tree-site maintenance to promote healthy growth and survival. This position plays a key role in supporting the City’s urban forestry initiatives, enhancing ecological health, and preserving community green spaces.
This job is ideal for those who enjoy working outdoors, have a passion for environmental sustainability, and want to contribute to community greening efforts.
This position is a seasonal 7-month assignment. 40 hours per week and may require weekend and holiday availability, as well as occasional overtime to meet the needs of the forestry department. Work is performed outdoors, and conditions may vary based on seasonal weather patterns. Acceptable Experience and Training- High school diploma or GED; coursework in forestry, horticulture, or environmental sciences is a plus.
- Previous experience in landscaping, irrigation, forestry, or related work is preferred.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)- Watering and Tree Care
- Transport water to planting sites and apply the appropriate amount to each tree using gator bags, 5-gallon buckets, or other approved watering devices.
- Monitor soil moisture and adjust watering based on weather conditions, tree species, and tree age.
- Inspect, clean, and maintain watering equipment to ensure efficient and reliable operation.
- Reapply wood chip mulch around trees where mulch has been depleted.
- Prune sucker growth and remove dead, dying, or broken limbs from young trees in accordance with best practices
- Install and maintain protective guards around main stems to protect trees from animal damage or mechanical injury.
- Tree Inspection and Reporting
- Observe and report signs of stress, disease, pests, or other conditions affecting tree health.
- Assist with basic tree care such as mulching, staking, and minor pruning.
- Remove newly planted trees that have failed outside of their warranty period, as directed.
- Document watering activities, locations, and notable observations to support ongoing tree health tracking and reporting.
- Safety and Environmental Standards
- Adhere to all safety policies and procedures while operating water trucks, hoses, and other equipment.
- Follow environmentally responsible practices to minimize water waste, soil compaction, and soil erosion.
- Work collaboratively with team members to promote a safe, respectful, and positive work environment.
- Other Duties Assigned
- Collect and enter data into the City’s tree inventory system.
- Monitor, inspect, and participate in tree planting activities conducted by City staff, contractors or developers.
- Respond to tree planting requests and inquiries from constituents.
- Assess planting sites to determine suitability with City guidelines and standards.
- Remove tree planting hardware, including stakes (metal or wooden), watering devices, protective sleeves, and similar materials, as appropriate.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
