DefinitionJoin our dedicated Facilities Maintenance team as a Building Maintenance Worker III and make a positive impact on the community of the City of Milpitas! The Maintenance Worker III ser ves as lead worker over a crew within their assigned area of responsibility to perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of public facilities. This is the advanced journey level class in the maintenance worker class series. The Maintenance Worker Ill is distinguished from other classes in the maintenance series by the responsibility assumed by leading a crew and by the performance of the more complex and responsible duties assigned to positions in this series. Incumbents at this level typically possess specialized skills, knowledge and abilities, and work independently.
The ideal candidate is a skilled and dependable professional with experience in public works facilities. They demonstrate strong leadership as a crew lead, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to standard. They bring hands-on expertise in tasks such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and equipment operation, along with the ability to read blueprints and maintain systems in compliance with health and safety codes. They are proficient in maintaining pools, pumps, filters, and related infrastructure.
They take pride in public service and contribute to the safety, function, and appearance of community facilities and infrastructure. scheduled to work 4, 10-hour days per week , which can allow for a generous work/life balance.
Examples of Duties The current vacancy is within the Facilities Maintenance Section. Duties may include but are not limited to:
- Serve as lead worker over an assigned crew;
- Provide guidance and training to less experienced personnel;
- Assist assigned supervisor with daily supervision of personnel and the timely completion of assigned duties;
- Check work of assigned crew;
- Maintain timesheets and other records as appropriate;
- Ensure that safety measures and practices are utilized at all times;
- Performs a variety of duties at the skilled level to maintain and repair city buildings, structures and their attendant equipment;
- Duties include carpentry, painting, lock-smith, plumbing, electrical control systems, HVAC systems, read blue prints, build and assemble furnishings;
- Balance and maintain proper water chemistry;
- Monitor/adjust filtration equipment;
- Calibrate chemical probes;
- Maintain/repair filters, pumps, motors, lines, tanks;
- Maintain and ensure all aspects of the Civic Center pond and Sports Center pool operations;
- Meet state and federal health code standards;
- Provide training and assist the Facilities Supervisor or Public Works Manager in assigning and coordination of work;
- Requisition of supplies and inspection of work performed by staff and contractors;
- Perform related duties as assigned.
RETIREMENTMembership in CalPERS (2% at 60 or 2% at 62 with three year average salary). City of Milpitas employees do not participate in Social Security, but do contribute to Medicare.Additionally, members pay $2.40/per hour to the LIUNA pension fund.
MEDICAL INSURANCEChoice of CalPERS Medical Plans. City pays coverage up to the Kaiser rate (currently $2,228.36/mo. for family). Employees who waive health coverage are eligible to receive $125 per month in lieu of medical plan coverage with proof of other coverage.
RETIREE MEDICALEmployees are eligible upon CalPERS retirement from the City to receive up to 100% retiree medical coverage (currently based on the Kaiser health rate), based on years of service.
DENTAL & VISIONCity provides full family coverage for Delta Dental and MES Vision at no cost to the employee.
LIFE INSURANCECity provides $50,000 term policy. Supplemental employee-paid life insurance is available up to $500,000, based on carrier acceptance.
DISABILITY INSURANCECity provides a Short-Term Disability plan similar to State Disability Insurance (SDI) coverage. Employees do not participate in SDI. Long-Term Disability coverage of 60% of base salary up to $1,500 per month is available after a 60-day waiting period. Additional buy-up options for LTD are available up to $6,000 per month.
VACATIONHourly employees earn 11-31 days of vacation per year based on years of service.
HOLIDAYSEmployees receive 12 paid holidays and one (1) floating holiday per year.
SICK LEAVEEmployees earn 12 days annually.
TUITION REIMBURSEMENTEmployees are eligible to receive up to $1,400 per fiscal year in tuition reimbursement.

$86,443.76 - $105,074.06 Annually
