*Subject to Change DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Houston Public Library is seeking an energetic, self-motivated, customer service driven individual committed to excellence and providing oversight of the Library Materials Services division of the Houston Public Library.
Essential job duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Manages, trains, develops, counsels and evaluates staff performance for up to 10 direct reports.
- Assists in the design and implementation of special systems, plans and projects related to library materials.
- Establishes and maintains policies and procedures for collection development, circulation, and other library materials projects
- Drafts and reviews proposed contracts, letters of agreements and RCAs for purchasing library materials of all types.
- Manages and negotiates procurement terms and conditions with potential vendors.
- Coordinates the preparation, implementation and monitoring of the budget and expenditures of the up to $6 million materials budget.
- Oversees transportation and material delivery for Library
- Researches, reviews and evaluates circulation data, and reports direct operations of the division.
- Acts as liaison to other departments and library systems.
Working Conditions Position requires stooping and bending; lifting of library materials up to 20 pounds. Must be able to move freely throughout the library to file/retrieve library materials. Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS Requires a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Engineering or a field closely related to activities of the division.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Seven (7) years of progressive professional experience closely related to the activities of the division are required, with at least three (3) of the years in a supervisory capacity.
A Master's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration or a field closely related to the activities of the division may be substituted for two (2) years of experience.
Directly related professional experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS A valid driver license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).
PREFERENCESPreference shall be given to applicant with
- A Master’s of Library Science degree from a school accredited by the American Library Association (ALA)
- Experience in a leadership capacity at a large urban library in Technical Services, collection development. Acquisitions, or materials processing
- Possess up to date and proficient knowledge of MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word) and Sirsi Symphony
- Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds
- Exhibit strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with others.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing
