Are you looking for an exciting and fun way to gain real-world experience in local government? Look no further! The city of Los Altos is seeking Summer Interns to join our team and assist us in delivering quality services to our community.

The city of Los Altos is looking for three (3) bright and enthusiastic interns to work full-time this summer on a variety of city projects.

The program, set to begin in June, allows students to better understand the inner workings of local government with internships in Parks & Recreation, City Manager's Office, and Development Services and a variety of projects! The internships are open to undergraduate and graduate-level students enrolled in a community college or university for Fall 2025.

Internships are an outstanding avenue for students to learn how public service jobs can be rewarding both personally and professionally. Offering these opportunities is a commitment from the City Council and city staff to start students on a path toward public service. We expect all will benefit from this program and look forward to welcoming our group of interns this summer.

We are looking to foster and mold the next generation of public servants through real-world experience. Interns will also have the opportunity to participate in networking and learning forums for a deeper insight into city divisions.

Examples of Duties

The five summer internship opportunities will be in the following departments:

Parks & Recreation:

The city of Los Altos has officially recertified as an age friendly city as of December 2024 with an age friendly action plan which outlines a variety of projects. One of the projects outlined in the action plan was to create an age friendly resource page on the city website which includes information and links to resources that can benefit aging adults. It was also requested to have the same information accessible in a hard copy resource binder at public locations like the Community Center, City Hall, Library, etc. In this internship you will assist the city in completing one of the age friendly action plan projects by providing information and resources to aging adults in our community.

This project will enhance research skills, website design skills, marketing skills, and collaboration with others.

City Manager's Office:

This internship program is focused on completing outreach to the residential and business communities on major project initiatives for the year, including, but not limited to the Downtown Park project and Small Business programs. This intern will be tasked with attending many community events throughout the summer on behalf of the city, and in addition to directly visiting small businesses.

This project will enhance skills in community engagement, public speaking, program management, and prioritization.

Development Services:

In this internship project you will learn about the city's BMR (Below Market Rate) Program and how an individual qualifies for a BMR rental or for-sale unit. Interns will be spearheading the organization method and system of all of the below market rate files for the city and digitizing city files. They will also be exposed to new State laws that are requiring cities to develop more affordable housing within their communities.

This project will enhance knowledge about affordable housing initiatives, laws and best practices related to sustainability approaches for more energy efficient housing. In addition, this project will enhance skills around researching, organization, and attention to detail.

Minimum Qualifications

ELIGIBILITY : The Summer Internship Program is open to undergraduate and higher graduate-level students who will be enrolled in a community college/university for Fall 2025.
