DESCRIPTION

The Long Beach Utilities Department has an immediate opening for the position of Public Affairs Assistant -Provisional.This position reports directly to the Public Information Officer and is eligible for a hybrid work schedule of four days in the office at the Long Beach Utilities Administration building, (1800 Wardlow Road, Long Beach, CA 90807) and one day telecommuting.

This is a provisional opportunity. All provisional appointments are temporary and valid until a priority or eligible list becomes available for the classification. Provisional appointments are valid for 150 days unless extended and approved by Civil Service Commission. If you want to be considered for this position permanently, you must apply through the Civil Service examination process. If you are not selected to fill the position on a permanent basis, your provisional appointment will be terminated. For City Employees: if you hold permanent status in another classification, you will be reinstated back to the position you held before the provisional appointment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The Public Affairs Assistant is responsible for administrative, technical, and professional duties pertaining to public affairs. The department’s next Public Affairs Assistant will specialize in social media management and contribute to elevating the Long Beach Utilities brand to become a household name for all topics pertaining to water, sewer, and natural gas services. The position oversees the department's online presence, coordinates and assists with special projects, conducts stakeholder research, represents at community events, and promotes department programs that tailor to diverse communities in the city of Long Beach. The position will also assist with emergency responses, newsworthy events, and media inquiries.

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

Candidates MUST meet both A and B requirements:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (proof required)*.

AND

Two years of paid, full-time equivalent experience in public affairs/public information.

OPPORTUNITES FOR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION OR EXPERIENCE

Experience offering specific and substantial preparation for the duties of the position may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
