DescriptionLooking for an exciting part-time job that allows you to make a difference in the lives of teens in your community? The City of Los Altos currently seeking Recreation Leaders and Senior Recreation Leaders for the following programs: Teen, Adult 50+, & Pickleball! TEEN PROGRAM: The Senior Recreation Leader reports to the Recreation Coordinator. The position is responsible for: planning, organizing, and leading a variety of recreation activities for teens. Typical activities include but are not limited to the following: drop-in teen hours, arts, crafts, sports, games, contests and special events. This individual must communicate well with the public, promote ongoing programs, and be able to work with fellow recreation leaders to assist in the implementation of recreational activities. They may also perform other related duties as assigned. This position will be working 15-20 hours per week. Teen Center Hours: Monday-Friday: 3:00pm to 6:00pm.
ADULT 50+ PROGRAM:As the Senior Recreation Leader for the Adult 50+ Program, you will play a key role in planning, organizing, and leading a wide range of activities and services for adults aged 50 and older. This includes facilitating excursions, special events, community services, and recreational activities such as ping pong and bocce ball. Additionally, you'll assist in coordinating 50+ community luncheons with adults, creating a welcoming and social atmosphere where participants feel well-served and well-fed. The Adult 50+ Program runs Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. but also offers special monthly programming and quarterly community events. Staff schedules typically average 12 hours per week, though they may vary depending on department needs.
PICKLEBALL PROGRAM: Make a positive impact on our Los Altos community by joining our team as a Pickleball Recreation Leader. The City of Los Altos has a very active pickleball community and an ideal candidate should be fun, passionate, positive, and interested in helping facilitate a pickleball program. This position will be working at Egan City Gym on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:45pm to 10:00pm, however times may vary depending on attendance. Recreation Leaders also have the opportunity to work in other department areas as needed. This position is part-time, temporary working approximately 10-20 hours per week.

Recreation Leader:- Assist Recreation Coordinator with the coordination and implementation of recreation programs and activities.
- Assist with the preparation and operation of assigned program areas including ordering supplies.
- Function effectively in leadership roles.
- Lead and provide direction to Recreation Leaders.
- Independently initiate and complete work activities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Senior Recreation Leader:- Assist with organizing and implementing recreation programs.
- Ensure equipment and supplies are available for planned indoor/outdoor recreational activities. This may include moving equipment and supplies from one location to another.
- Lead and direct large groups of participants in recreation activities.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships and work cooperatively with other city staff, while maintaining the city’s high standards.
- Be considerate, respectful, and provide exceptional customer service to program participants and the public.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Teens:- Plan activities for teens which may include art, workshops, homework support, special events, and contests.
- Knowledge of youth programming for ages 11-18 years.
Adult 50+:- Plan and implement activities for adults which may include art, workshops, special events, mini trips, resources for services available for seniors, etc.
- Knowledge of adult programming for ages 50 - 99+.
- Create a safe and welcoming environment at two program sites.
- Coordinate and support program volunteers and vendors.
- Ability to manage rosters, memberships, waivers, and additional administrative duties using technology and software.
- Manage inventory of supplies.
Adult Sports:- Plan adult sports which may include indoor pickleball, pickleball classes and events, bocce ball classes and events, annual adult softball game and more.
- Knowledge of adult sports programming for ages 18 - 99+.
- Ability to manage memberships and waivers.
- Manage inventory of supplies.
- Communicate effectively and clearly with city staff, volunteers, and the public.
- Create a safe and welcoming environment at two program sites.

Minimum QualificationsAny combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Recreation Leader:EXPERIENCE:
- Recreation Leaders must be at least 16 years of age unless otherwise specified.
- Recreation Leaders working for Adult 50+ or Adult Sports program must be at least 18 years of age.
- Volunteer experience in recreation, outdoor education, sports and/or crafts preferred.
- First aid and CPR certification must be obtained prior to working the first day with participants.
Senior Recreation Leader:EXPERIENCE:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- One year of paid experience in supervising staff or leading a team. Alternatively, one season of experience equivalent to the City’s classification of Recreation Leader may substitute for one year of paid experience.
- Leadership in activity, project planning/implementation preferred.
EDUCATION:
- Possession of a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent is required.
- Coursework in Recreation, Child Development, Administration, Environmental Education or related field preferred.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Knowledge of safety precautions.
- Knowledge of team building principles.
SKILL AND ABILITY TO:
- Ability to positively manage program participant behaviors.
- Possess good organization and problem-solving skills.
- Practice positive and effective oral communication.
- Use a computer and a variety of software platforms such as google drive.
Supplemental InformationPHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Ability to use and train others on computer equipment for documents, templates and control systems.
- Ability to climb, balance, walk and stand for long periods of time.
- Ability to observe and take direction and lead.
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers, outside contacts, and all levels of employees. Ability to review, comprehend, and respond to all necessary documentation.
