Position DescriptionEmployees in this classification are responsible for performing a wide variety of patient care activities in an assigned specialty or sub-specialty outpatient clinic. Work is performed under the direction of a licensed staff nurse and/or physician as part of a total health care team in providing complete evaluations to patients. Work is performed under usual clinic conditions, necessitating a high degree of contact with patient, families and clinic personnel.
Major/Essential Functions- All employees are expected to understand and conduct themselves by following the performance criteria and meeting departmental and institutional performance standards.
- Performs work professionally and in accordance with expected performance standards; Adheres to attendance, timeliness, and work schedule standards.
- Monitors nursing processes to determine patients' and their families' physical and mental health status, needs, and preferences.
- Monitors communication via Electronic Health Records to support decision-making for the delivery of optimal patient care. Complies with the identification of patient needs and assists in resolving patient needs or requests within 24-48 hours. Implements and facilitates continuity of care. Appropriately document care provided and the patient's response to care.
- Works with faculty physicians to fill medication refills, schedule procedures, obtain MRI or procedure and lab results, and then report findings to the physician. Appropriately documents care provided and patient's response to care in an appropriate and timely manner.
- Inspects examination/treatment rooms to ensure they are properly stocked and compliant with infection prevention and control policies. Prepares and operates necessary equipment and instruments for examination, treatments and procedures. Sterilizes and disinfects medical equipment and instruments.
- Patient Intake - Calls patients from the lobby to the exam room. Takes vital signs and measurements, then accurately documents them in patient EMR. Creates patient in-take form. Reconciles patient medications and updates medication list as needed. Appropriately document care provided.
- Ensures patient calls are appropriately documented in patient Electronic Health Records and responds to patient requests within 48 hours of receipt of call.
- Weekly reviews of medical supplies to ensure they are properly stocked. Notifies supervisor when supplies are low. Removes all perforated boxes from the clinic.
- Monitors schedules, room utilization and clinic patient flow to ensure maximum efficiency.
- Ensures physician orders for tests, referrals and/or lab tests are in the patient's EMR. Contacts ordering physician to advise of critical results.
- Ensures all clinical staff and providers meet all joint commission standards.
- Works with Unit Manager and Administrator to create, update and implement nursing and patient care policies.
- Will train junior nurse team members on new or updated policies or processes.
- Works closely with physicians to complete patient paperwork.
- Completes Annual Nursing Core Competency Training and Skills Fair.
Required QualificationsEducation: Completion of a Board of Nursing accredited program of vocational nursing or scheduled to complete a program of vocational nursing within 120 days of applying for a position.
License/Certification: Current Vocational Nursing license in the state of Texas or the attainment of a temporary permit from the Board of Nursing to practice vocational nursing pending full licensure in the state of Texas. New graduates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX- PN) on the first attempt.
Experience: No experience required.
