Description
The PositionOPEN EXAMINATION - SIX-MONTH PROBATIONARY PERIODUnder direct supervision of the Wastewater Maintenance Supervisor, this classification performs skilled maintenance of the City wastewater and related structures.
Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following: Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards.
Inspects and cleans City wastewater lines and storm drain facilities by removing manhole covers and using a variety of current industrial wastewater cleaning equipment. Locates, excavates, shores and repairs broken wastewater and storm drainpipes.
Operates, maintains and performs various technical repairs to Robotic Television inspection equipment.
Operates and maintains various lift station facilities throughout the City, cleans all wastewater and storm drainpipes, and removes any restrictions. Participates in the response to Sanitary Sewer overflows. Sets sample meter devices.
Keeps and maintains complete and accurate records of all work performed and specialized equipment used.
Maintains ongoing program dealing with eradication of cockroaches, mosquitoes and other assorted vermin.
May act as Senior Wastewater Maintenance Worker in their absence.
Assists in the implementation and enforcement of related environmental codes and policies.
Utilizes specialized wastewater confined space safety equipment including breathing devices, gas detectors and safety harnesses. Properly places traffic barricades, cones and delineators in traffic situations.
Drives on City business.
Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe, efficient manner.
Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.
Minimum Requirements Experience Successful Completion of the City of Glendale Wastewater Maintenance Trainee Program or one year of experience performing skilled or semiskilled underground utility or municipal wastewater work for a public or private firm.
Education/Training Graduation from high school or attainment of GED, CHSPE, or CPP certificate.
License(s)/Certification(s) Class B Driver’s License with necessary endorsements.
A current DMV printout is required. Applicant must provide a copy of their DMV driving record at the time of application. Failure to provide this record may disqualify the candidate from participating in the selection process.
A California Water Environmental Association (CWEA), collection system maintenance certification is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of:Applicable safety rules, practices and procedures.
Proper traffic control and delineation procedures.
Methods, operation and policies related to the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), State Water Resources Control Board Order No. 2022-0103-DWQ Statewide General Waste Discharge Rules for Sanitary Sewer Systems, and Standard Urban Storm Water Mitigation Plan (SUSMP) regulations.
Ability to: Provide exceptional customer service to all employees and vendors.
Communicate effectively in English.
Complete necessary training and attain required certifications for the classification by the end of the probationary period and/or trainee program.
Deal directly and tactfully with customer complaints and resolve issues proficiently.
Develop necessary skills from on-the-job training and meet the standards of performance for the classification by the end of the probationary period and/or trainee program.
Establish and maintain smooth and effective working relationships.
Foster a teamwork environment.
Keep accurate records.
Model and practice the highest standards of ethical conduct.
Perform physical labor, sometimes in confined spaces, for extended periods of time.
Read, write and comprehend directions in English.

ORAL INTERVIEW: (Weight: 100%) To evaluate the applicant's experience, education, and general background for the position. Candidates must pass the exam with a minimum score of 70.00% in order to be placed on the eligible list.
TIME AND PLACE OF THE EXAMINATION WILL BE ANNOUNCED. Evaluations will be based on the candidate's education and experience relevant to the position. Examinations will assess evaluate the candidate's education, experience, knowledge and skills related to the job. The City of Glendale reserves the right to modify the examination components or their weighting. If changes are necessary, candidates will be informed of the specific examination components and their weight before the examination is administered. The selected candidate will undergo a background check, including Livescan fingerprinting.
