Do you have a high school or college project to work on this spring? Become an intern at Nevada County’s Public Health Department and make a difference in our community!

The Public Health Department provides a range of health services that promote the wellness, self-sufficiency, and safety of Nevada County residents as part of the Health and Human Services Agency, with the common goal of strengthening families and the community. Some of our programs include control of communicable diseases, coordination of the response to health emergencies, individual case management, primary prevention of disease, and wellness promotion.

This internship will be working with the Tobacco Prevention Program within the Health and Wellness Department at Public Health. This intern will work under the direct supervision of our Tobacco Coordinator, focusing on reducing youth access to tobacco products, and educating the community about the dangers of second and thirdhand smoke. They will work on coalition-building efforts, will conduct key informant interviews of various elected and city officials, and survey focus groups in the community. Days will include working out in our community with the Tobacco Coordinator, visiting store retailers, multi-unit housing properties, and working alongside youth in various settings including schools and conducting training and surveying efforts.

This intern, under supervision by their supervisor, may perform a broad range of responsibilities such as:

We seek an intern with the ability to conceptualize and organize projects into manageable tasks, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn; who is professional, organized, and not intimidated by deadlines. This internship is best suited for students or regional occupation programs, career technical education, community college, or graduates. Candidates should be flexible, reliable, have good written and verbal skills, and be comfortable working with youth and adults. The work this individual will perform may be completed 100% in person or a hybrid of in-person and telework.

This position is part-time temporary; this part-time employee is expected to work an average of 6-16 hours per week, for a maximum of 200 hours between the start of the internship and July 1, 2025. Hours can be scheduled in 2- to 8-hour blocks of time during regular business hours (Monday through Friday). Temporary employees earn sick leave but are not eligible for other vacation or holiday pay, medical, dental, or vision benefits, or CalPERS.
