THE ASSESSOR-RECORDER-COUNTY CLERK DEPARTMENT assesses value of taxable property; records and maintains documents for property ownership, births, deaths, and marriages; performs civil ceremonies; and processes marriage licenses, fictitious business names and other legal documents. Our department provides a great opportunity to pursue work that balances interaction with the public alongside problem solving and highly detailed regulatory work.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Current Vacancy: The Department of the Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk is recruiting for one full-time, Fixed-Term position that is initially funded for up to two (2) years.

This position may end before two years or be extended beyond depending on funding and staffing needs. Fixed-term positions are eligible to receive full benefits.

Please note: We are also recruiting for vacancies in the positions of Appraiser I/II. If you are interested in working in the Appraisal and Assessment field, you are welcome to submit applications for both Appraiser Aide and Appraiser I/II. There is no penalty for submitting applications to both recruitments. However, you must submit a separate application to the Appraiser I/II recruitment to be considered for the Appraiser I/II levels.

Appraiser Aides receive on-the-job training in real property assessment and gain invaluable experience in appraisal principles and practices. These positions provide administrative, clerical and technical support related to property tax assessment work for the department’s Appraisal unit.

In this job, you would also:

Work Location: Work for this position is performed at the Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk’s Offices in San Rafael and other County campuses. Additionally, appraisal work includes field visits to properties throughout Marin County.

Fixed Term Positions: This is a two-year fixed term position. However, there may be opportunities for the hired individual during this time-period to move to a regular, ongoing position as other vacancies or promotional opportunities occur, or the position may be funded and convert to an ongoing position. Fixed-term employment ends when the position’s funding finishes, or the work is completed. Employees in these positions are exempt from the County’s policies regarding lay-off order and reduction-in-force rights.

Though not required for this position, experience in related fields such as real estate (including appraisal, sales, leasing or management) mortgages, construction, or in a regulatory or legal agency is high desirable, as is a working familiarity with maps.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Equivalent to 60 semester units or 90 quarter units of university or college coursework; OR

Equivalent to a high school diploma and two years of relevant experience (relevant experience is defined to mean employment experience within the last ten years) in property assessment functions in a California Assessor’s office; OR

Equivalent to a high school diploma and two years of relevant experience (relevant experience is defined to mean employment experience within the last ten years) in real estate sales, real estate management, leasing of real estate, mortgage industry, construction industry, or experience in a regulatory or legal agency, or a closely related field.
