THE POSITIONThe following tasks are essential for this position. Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.
- Installs irrigation systems using ditch diggers and hand tools.
- Repair’s irrigation systems including the use of blueprints to locate the system, diagnose and correct the problem.
- Periodically inspects, services, and repairs all citywide irrigation systems. Assures the proper water coverage of all turf and shrub areas.
- Replaces worn, damaged, or defective sprinkler heads to assure proper water coverage. Troubleshoots and repairs automatic controllers, and remote-control valves.
- Identifies and implements better ways for meeting service demands through streamlining and improving work methods.
- Operates computer-controlled irrigation equipment and central controller systems. Participates in the work of an irrigation maintenance technician including work procedures, training, solving work problems, and promoting safety and work efficiency.
- Maintains accurate records of daily work output. Design’s irrigation systems and provides input regarding design and layout of new irrigation systems.
- Inspects irrigation plans and work performed by outside contractors.
- Maintains and repairs water pumps and pumping equipment including electrical control systems.
Minimum Requirements: Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: High School graduation and one year of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation equipment including computer-controlled irrigation systems. Must have skills in diagnosing and repairing irrigation system problems.
Highly Desirable: Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Knowledge of manual and/or computerized irrigation systems. Working knowledge of spray and drip line irrigation systems. Understanding of local, state, and federal water regulations.
Licenses and Certificates: Must possess a Los Angeles County backflow cross-connection license within one year of the date of hire and a valid California Class C driver’s license.
EXAMINATION PROCEDURES- Performance Test (weighted at 50%): To measure the ability to perform irrigation system maintenance tasks. Tentatively scheduled for the week of February 17, 2025.
- Appraisal Interview (weighted at 50%): To evaluate training, experience, and personal qualifications. Tentatively scheduled for the week of February 24, 2025.
