OverviewThe Larimer County Community Development Department is looking for a skilled and hard-working individual to join our team as a Building Inspector!
A Building Inspector inspects buildings and structures during various stages of construction and remodeling to assure compliance with approved plans, specifications, and applicable codes and regulations of county, state, and federal agencies.
The typical schedule for this position is 7am - 3:30pm Monday to Friday.
ResponsibilitiesSpecifically, this position:
- Inspects residential, commercial, agricultural, and other buildings and structures during construction for compliance with approved plans, adopted building codes, related ordinances, and the National Electrical Code (if applicable).
- Enforces building, development, and zoning requirements; issues official documents including, but not limited to, correction notices, stop-work orders, re-inspection notices, and final approvals. Reviews construction plans of commercial, industrial, and residential building projects to determine that the builder is in compliance with the approved plans.
- Confers with owners, contractors, architects, and engineers; explains and interprets requirements and restrictions of the building codes.
- Reviews engineering and soils reports, inspection certifications, and related correspondence.
- Ensures citizen compliance with county codes to enhance the safety and welfare of the community; investigates life/safety building code violations received from citizens or code enforcement; explains and interprets requirements and restrictions to customers.
- Coordinates, reassigns, and routes out daily inspections to be most effective.
- Assists Code Compliance with as-built construction inspections and violation investigations.
- May assist in minor plan review such as basements, decks, and non-structural alterations.
- Researches product listings with testing agencies to verify accurate use of product.

We are looking for a candidate that will:
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
- Read and comprehend department and County rules, regulations, policies and standard operating procedures.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.
- Understand the principles, practices, and objectives as related to building construction, safety standards, and accepted methods and materials in a building inspections program.
- Understand the p rinciples and practices of electrical systems, safety standards, and accepted methods and materials of construction (if applicable).
- Understand the scope and application of county and state laws and regulations pertaining to building codes and ordinances (specifically the International Building Codes and the National Electrical Code as applicable), code enforcement, zoning, and general land use.
- Have experience in proper inspection techniques to examine the quality of work and materials, and detect deviations from plans, regulations, and standard construction practices.
- Be able to perform detailed examination of structural components for building code compliance.
- Provide professional customer service to clients and public.
- Calculate formulas for sizing of vents, combustion air ducts, pipes, beams, joists, and rafters.
QualificationsAll candidates will be screened for the following required minimum qualifications. Any candidate who does not meet all of the qualifications listed as required will be eliminated from the process.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Three (3) years of responsible experience in the journey level trades or as a contractor in a variety of building construction activities required.
- Possession of ICC certifications in Commercial and Residential Plumbing and Building Inspection within one (1) year of hire required.
- Colorado licensed Journeyman Electrician or higher preferred.
- Three (3) years of responsible experience as a licensed journey-level electrician or higher preferred.
- Possession of a valid Driver's License by date of hire required.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, ICC certifications in Mechanical and Energy preferred.
