Your Role: As a skilled Carpenter, you’ll work under general supervision to perform a variety of carpentry tasks including new construction, remodeling, and maintenance. Your work will enhance our campus facilities, from offices and classrooms to restrooms and recreational areas.
Key Responsibilities: - Build, remodel, and repair facilities, including classrooms, offices, restrooms, and more.
- Renovate spaces by adding or removing windows, doors, and walls.
- Install wall coverings, ceilings, and floors.
- Repair and install drywall, ceiling, and floor tiles.
- Construct cabinets, counters, shelves, benches, and partitions.
- Install and repair modular furniture, door and window frames, and hang doors and windows.
- Install signs, display boards, blinds, fixtures, and repair furnishings such as tables, chairs, desks, and lab benches.

Position Information - This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible permanent/probationary position.
- This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
- Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
Department Summary The Division of Business and Financial Affairs is responsible for ensuring a safe, productive campus environment while providing the highest quality service in support of academic excellence through thoughtful stewardship of financial, technological, infrastructure and human resources at San Diego State University.
SDSU Facilities Services (FS) is a customer-service based organization providing facility maintenance activities through a transparent and deliberate process. It is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel, and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university. Facilities Services employs approximately 250 employees and supports approximately eight million square feet of buildings (including residence halls and parking structures) and 280 acres of improved and unimproved land.

Education and Experience Knowledge: Work requires thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in both rough and finished carpentry; various types and grades of lumber; hand and power carpentry tools; and applicable state safety codes and regulations pertaining to the carpentry trade, including the Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety for the State of California and California State Building Codes.
Abilities: Must be able to build, install and repair structural woodwork, flooring, ceilings and cabinetry; operate and maintain hand and power carpentry tools; read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications; recognize and select appropriate lumber types and grades; make rough sketches; estimate the cost, time and materials of carpentry projects; maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; prepare standard reports; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position. Incumbents may be required to possess a California Driver’s License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to maintain and operate.
Experience: These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through the completion of a carpenter’s apprenticeship program
Key Qualifications - Ability to perform a full range of skilled carpentry work including new construction, remodeling, repair, and maintenance.
- Ability to be able to work unsupervised on a variety of job tasks from simple to complex; must be able to coordinate multiple projects.
- Ability to build, remodel, and repair various types of facilities, buildings, offices, classrooms, restrooms, sheds, scaffolds, forms, frames, fences, and other structures.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical work; utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination.
- Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations and to recognize, secure and report unsafe conditions immediately.
- Two years of experience as a journey-level carpenter responsible for the planning, organizing and coordinating of assigned work orders or projects is preferred.
Licenses/Certifications Required Valid California Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.
Compensation and Benefits Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $6,400 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $6,076 - $8,766 per month.
