SPECIAL SALARY INFORMATION: Management Appraisal of Performance Plan (MAPP): This position is subject to the provisions of the Management Appraisal of Performance Plan (MAPP). Initial salary placement and subsequent salary adjustments will be made in accordance with MAPP guidelines and regulations.
No out-of-class experience will be accepted. DEFINITION: Assists in planning, directing, administering, and coordinating environmental health programs, operations and work activities of the Environmental Health Division.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS: The one position allocable to this class is located in the Department of Public Health, Environmental Health Division and works under the direction of the Environmental Health Deputy. The Environmental Health Assistant Deputy is responsible for assisting in planning, directing, administering and coordinating environmental health programs, operations, activities, and services for the department. This responsibility includes planning, directing, and coordinating, through lower-level environmental health managers and supervisors, major environmental health functional areas including Environmental Protection, Food Inspection, Housing Inspection, and Special Operations and Planning. The position is also responsible for analyzing and providing recommendations on a wide variety of organizational and administrative issues including financial management and budget, environmental health policies and procedures, and personnel and may act for the Environmental Health Deputy in that person's absence.
Essential Job Functions- Assists in administration of the Environmental Health Division by directing and coordinating, through lower-level managers and supervisors, the work activities of major environmental health areas and programs including but not limited to: Environmental Protection, Food Inspections, Housing Inspection, and Planning and Evaluation.
- Assists in formulating and administering environmental health programs designed to enable effective enforcement of environmental laws and regulations; consults with State, federal, regional and local environmental agencies on methods of operation.
- Analyzes and provides recommendations on organizational issues, financial management and budget, environmental health policies and procedures, contract administration, and other administrative and programmatic areas of the Environmental Health Division.
- Coordinates the work activities and services of the environmental health programs and projects with other city, county, regional, state, and federal related programs.
- Represents the department and functions as a departmental liaison with outside agencies and organizations on environmental health issues and services; and participates in outside community and professional groups and committees.
- Conducts investigations and provides recommendations to the Board of Supervisors and other governmental bodies on environmental problems, land use, and special permits.
- Ensures the efficient use of department personnel including assisting with selections and promotions, conducting performance evaluations and recommending disciplinary actions and dismissals.
- Act for the environmental health deputy in that person's absence, as needed.
Requirements MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Two (2) years of supervisory experience* within a comprehensive environmental health program** directing a staff of registered environmental health specialists performing a full range of inspections and investigations for the enforcement of environmental health and consumer protection laws at the level of Los Angeles County class of Chief Environmental Health Specialist*** or higher.
*The two (2) years of supervisory experience must have included assignments in at least two environmental health program areas of at least one year duration each. LICENSE(S) AND CERTIFICATE(S) REQUIRED: 1. Certification as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist issued by the State of California, Department of Public Health****.
2. A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
PHYSICAL CLASS: 2 - Light - This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

weighted 100% . Applicants must meet the requirements described above at the time of filing and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be added to the Eligible Register.
Passing this examination and being added to the Eligible Register does not guarantee an offer of employment. ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION: The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the Eligible Register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility.
NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS .
