THE POSITION

NON-CAREER PART-TIME

The Department of Youth, Parks, & Community Enrichment (YPCE) Youth Workforce Development Unit is hiring one Recreation Aide to support Young Leaders of Tomorrow (YLOT) and Jr. Rec Aide (JRA) programs. The YLOT program provides youth 10-12 years old an opportunity to engage in activities that explore various elements of leadership that can be integrated into navigating personal day-to-day challenges they may experience. The JRA program provides youth 15-17 years old the opportunity to learn and practice the skills needed to obtain employment as a City of Sacramento YPCE Recreation Aide. The in-person sessions include hands-on activities grounded in Youth Development principles where participants engage in critical thinking, self-advocacy, youth voice, collaboration, and discussions with peers and adult mentors. Upon successful completion of the programs, a participant receives a certificate of completion and a monetary stipend.

The Recreation Aide works approximately 18 hours per week, Monday through Friday with occasional weekends. These programs operate during afterschool hours and staff must be available late afternoons and early evenings, plus occasional weekends.

On a seasonal and/or part-time basis, lead and/or monitor a variety of recreation and community engagement activities at a facility or for a special event.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Employees in this classification are non-career. Incumbents can work up to 1040 hours per year. This classification differs from a Senior Recreation Aide in that the Senior Recreation Aide is responsible for supervising Recreation Aides.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Immediate supervision is provided by a higher-level position. Recreation Aides may provide direction to volunteers and/or youth aides.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Age:
Must be at least 16 years old by time of appointment.

Note: Employees assigned to START and 4th R must 18 years old by time of appointment.

Driver License:
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License is mandatory for some assignments. Loss of the Class C is cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be considered for accommodation on a case-by-case basis.

This position is designated as a Mandatory Reporter; completion of Mandatory Reporter training is required within two weeks of employment.

Physical Requirements:

Work may be performed outdoors with exposure to heat, often over 100 degrees, sun, noise, dust, and pollens; intermittently, lift, carry or move equipment of 20 pounds or less.

Work Conditions:
Some assignments may require working evenings and weekends.
