LOCATION : WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT, WASTEWATER COLLECTION SYSTEMS SECTION, COMPTON FIELD OFFICE, COMPTON

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
To perform progressively more skilled maintenance and repairs to automotive vehicles and gasoline-powered equipment.

JOB SUMMARY :

Under general direction of the Supervisor of Pumping Plant Operations and Maintenance the job content can involve examining automobiles, trucks, gasoline and natural gas-powered engines and electric scooters and determining and correcting a wide variety of mechanical defects: making minor and major mechanical repairs including adjustments, tune-ups and overhauls; inspecting, adjusting, assembling and replacing necessary units and related parts including valves, pistons and main bearing; repairing brakes, electrical and ignition systems; maintaining and repairing cooling, fuel and exhaust systems; performing preventative maintenance work including lubrications and oil changes; performing emergency repairs in the field; instructing apprentices; assesses vehicles for roadworthiness and test drives to evaluate mechanical performance; and performing related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must possess a valid California Class C driver license -AND- equivalent to four years of experience in the automotive mechanic apprentice program with the County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, one year of which must have been at the Automotive Mechanic Apprentice II level performing progressively more skilled repairs on gasoline engines and vehicles.

Twelve units of college coursework approved by the Districts or completion of one year of a two year trade school in an automotive repair technology or closely related program may be considered in lieu of one year of the required experience -OR- Graduation from a two-year trade school in an automotive repair technology or closely related program may be considered in lieu of two years of the required experience.

EXAMPLES OF ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The competitive selection process may cover a knowledge of: Principles of internal combustion engine and vehicle mechanical operation, adjustment, repair and maintenance; practices, tools and equipment used in vehicle and engine repair; occupational hazards and safety regulations of the trade. The ability to: Make mechanical repairs to a variety of gasoline powered equipment; adapt available tools and parts to specific repair, remodeling or rebuilding problems; instruct apprentices in trade techniques.

RETIREMENT





COMPENSATION

Employees receive annual salary increases until reaching step 5 of the salary range and are provided with opportunities to promote. Cost of living adjustments are implemented annually in accordance with labor agreements.

TUITION REIMBURSEMENT
Employees may be eligible for tuition reimbursement for approved accredited course work.

STUDENT LOAN PAYMENT REIMBURSEMENT
For some bargaining units, the Districts will provide student loan payment reimbursements for principal or interest paid by the employee on a qualified education loan incurred by the employee for the education of the employee. The annual maximum reimbursement is $5,250 and the lifetime reimbursement limit is $21,000.
