Description
Introduction Performs the operation, maintenance, cleaning, inspection, preventative maintenance, repair, and construction of City's Wastewater Collection Infrastructure. Operates a variety of heavy equipment such as a combination sewer truck. This includes all aspects of the operation and maintenance of 1,500+ miles of sewer pipe, over 300 sewer lift stations and 5 large pump stations, in addition to all mechanical maintenance aspects of related equipment.
Anticipated starting salary may be up to mid-point depending on candidate's experience and internal equity. Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience:- A High School diploma or General Education Development (GED) equivalent.
- Three years of experience in the operation and maintenance of large wastewater collection systems that includes multiple pump stations, heavy duty pump maintenance, equipment related to odor mitigation systems, combination hydro/jetter cleaning truck and associated equipment.
- Preferred:
- Experience in pump operations and chemical feed.
- Experience in the operation and maintenance of sewer force main systems that include sophisticated pumping arrangements and odor control.
- Experience with advanced computerized systems utilized in wastewater collection works.
- Experience in mechanical and electrical trouble shooting.
Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements:- Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date. The Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles requires that out-of-state driver's licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to the State of Arizona.
- This position requires satisfactory results of a pre-employment drug screen and a pre-employment physical that includes a pulmonary/respiratory exam.
- Must possess upon hire or promotion and maintain a Grade 2 operator certification from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality within the discipline of Wastewater Collection.
- Must obtain and maintain within six months of hire or promotion a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with tanker endorsement. Must maintain a valid CDL with appropriate endorsements and will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as required by law.
- Must possess and maintain a valid DOT Medical Certification Card within 6 months of hire or promotion date.
- Must obtain within six months of hire or promotion certification as a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) user.
- Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.
Essential Functions Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:
- Performs maintenance associated with the wastewater collection system which includes the heavy-duty maintenance and repair of small and large submersible pumps, sewer mains, air release valves and sewer services as well as the repair of residential sewer laterals.
- Maintains pumps, tanks, switches, diesel and natural gas generators at City sewer lift stations large sewer pumpback stations, sewer wetwells, and odor control sites. Performs maintenance and control work on odor mitigation equipment, various pressure control devices and adjusts the system to meet specific demands.
- Acts as a first responder to sanitary sewer overflows (SSO's) within the wastewater collection system to prevent undesirable environmental impacts to the community.
- Operates a high velocity combination hydro/jetter sewer cleaning truck; adjusts manhole covers and performs main line sewer repairs.
- Performs construction and fabrication at work sites.
- Repairs and maintains all types of valves, pumps and equipment, including hydrogen sulfide mitigation systems, electric and hydraulic valves, blowers and fans.
- Repairs, maintains and modifies complex chemical feed systems.
- Maintains accurate computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) covering various equipment related to large, complex wastewater collection systems. Oversees and completes modifications, fabrications and upgrades to facilities mechanical systems such as chemical tank and feed systems plumbing and piping.
Work Environment/Physical Demands - Potential for exposure to hazardous chemical feed and storage systems and below grade infrastructure containing high levels of hydrogen sulfide gas.
- Performs manual work that requires standing and walking/moving continuous periods of time, lifting, bending and climbing elevations, stairs and rough terrain.
- Works in small areas and must climb ladders or steps to reach objects.
- Moves and lifts up to 50 pounds both short and long distances.
- Moderate exposure to dust, noise, and inclement weather and temperature extremes.
- Travels to/from various locations.
- May work rotating weekend shifts, holidays, mandatory overtime and a call-out schedule.
