DESCRIPTIONCome join the City of Long Beach! Our Community Recreation Services Bureau, in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, is seeking amazing Recreation Program Leaders to assist with the Movies in the Park program.
The Movies in the Park program provides free movie viewings to the community at various parks in the City of Long Beach. This program is offered largely from June to August (weekday nights), but also occasionally throughout the year (few weekend nights and weekdays). Schedule hours would be about 5-7 hours per event, depending on position and event location. Events start typically on or around sunset. T here may be opportunities to assist with other recreation programs throughout the year, depending on need. These positions can be filled at the following levels, depending on qualifications: PROGRAM/SUPPORT TEAM (RECREATION LEADER SPECIALIST III-IV) - $ 16.76 - 17.31 / hour
LEAD STAFF (RECREATION LEADER SPECIALIST V) - $ 18.09 / hour
DRIVER/LEAD STAFF (RECREATION LEADER SPECIALIST VII-NC) - $ 20.87 / hour
The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is a nationally recognized and award-winning organization with 1,100 full-time/part time staff and a budget of $85 million. The Department oversees facilities and programs that reflect the needs and interests of a culturally diverse community, including: 170 parks with more than 3,200 acres devoted to open space and recreation, 27 community centers, 3 public pools, 6 miles of beaches, and 3 marinas.
The Department provides free and fee-based recreational programs and leisure opportunities, both self-directed and organized, for people of all ages and cultures. Youth programs include free youth sports for ages 5 to 14 serving nearly 10,000 participants annually, summer and vacation day camps, 2,100 recreational and educational classes, sailing and aquatics instruction, teen center activities, skateboarding opportunities, and supervised afterschool and weekend activities at parks and schools. In addition, approximately 12,000 youth participate in non-Department sports leagues that utilize park facilities.
Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period, and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Program/Support Staff Duties: - Meets at event sites through Long Beach to set up movie event equipment, including a giant inflatable screen, speakers, generators, A/V equipment, etc.
- Greets and interacts with customers at recreation information table.
- Works with Program Driver to unload and load all movie event equipment from the City vehicle, as well as set up and break down equipment.
- Remains on-site during the event for any potential troubleshooting needed during movie showing.
- Utilizes popcorn machine to make and serve popcorn.
- Perform all other assigned duties as requested by the lead staff and/or supervisor.
Lead Staff Duties: - Back-up driver for Movies in the Park program.
- Drives a City vehicle (truck or similar vehicle) to pick up and transport program equipment to various movie event sites throughout Long Beach.
- Monitors and adds fuel to City vehicle and generator from the designated City of Long Beach fuel station.
- Reports vehicle maintenance updates and needs to supervisor.
- Works with Program/Support team to unload and load all movie event equipment from the City vehicle, as well as set up and break down equipment.
- Monitors and guides Program/Support Staff and ensures event success.
- Post movie banners at various locations.
- Work with Supervisor to plan each movie night including set up, staffing and last minute changes.
Lead Driver Duties: - Drives a City vehicle (truck or similar vehicle) to pick up and transport program equipment to various movie event sites throughout Long Beach.

- Reports vehicle maintenance updates and needs to supervisor.

- Purchases program supplies and makes sure inventory is stocked.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILEThis position is open to all candidates who meet the following minimum qualifications:
- Must be at least 16 years of age (if under 18, must have valid work permit).
- Must have access to reliable transportation to and from various Long Beach park sites.
- Must have a valid motor vehicle operator's license (applicable to Lead Staff position only).
- Must be willing to work evenings, both weekdays and weekends.
- Must meet at least one of the options below (applicable to Lead Driver position only):
- (Option A) - Two (2) years (or equivalent 500 hours total) of part-time experience (paid or unpaid) working in recreation or a related field ; OR,
- (Option B) - Forty-eight (48) units of college education, including a minimum of eight (8) units in recreation or a related field; OR,
- (Option C) - A combination of education and experience as outlined above.
