DEPARTMENTBART Police Department is a progressive agency and has been on the forefront - and in some cases the model approach to training in the areas of fair and impartial policing, bias-based policing, crisis intervention, cultural competence training, and de-escalation training. The mission of the BART Police Department is to ensure a safe environment within our transit system, reduce crime through a highly visible police presence, and proactive enforcement of the law, and to promote public confidence by working in partnership with our stakeholders and the communities we serve.
SELECTION PROCESSThis announcement will be used to establish a pool of eligible candidates, for vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months.
This position is represented by the BART Police Management Association. Applications will be evaluated to ensure that minimum qualifications, required licenses, and POST certificates are met. Applicants who satisfy these criteria will progress in the selection process. Please note that BART District employees will receive priority for positions over external candidates, in line with the governing MOU. The selection process may include a skills demonstration, a written exam, and/or individual or panel interviews. This process consists of four (4) phases, and candidates must successfully complete each phase to continue.
Phase 1: Law Enforcement Sergeant Written Examination. (T entatively scheduled for the week of December 2nd.) The written exam will focus on the following subjects:
- Problem Solving, Decision Making, and Planning
- Supervision
- Field Operations
- Legal Principles
- Written Communication
- General Law Enforcement Principles - CA
To prepare for the exam, review the following source/reference materials:
1. Hess, K. and Wrobleski H. (2008). For the Record: Report Writing in Law Enforcement, 6th Edition. Innovative Systems.
2. Adams, T. (2014). Police Field Operations, 8th Edition. Pearson Prentice Hall.

Optional: The hiring department will host a command staff "meet & greet" and mock interview session for candidates. (Tentatively scheduled for the week of December 10th)

The entire selection process may take six (6) months to one (1) year from the date that the eligibility list is established.
Vacancies are filled according to the needs of the Police Department and in compliance with the collective bargaining agreement. Consequently, the Police Department and Human Resources reserve the right to cancel or extend a hiring pool as needed. The Police Chief will oversee the 'Rule of 5' process for selecting candidates as vacancies arise. Therefore, the order of placement in the eligibility pool does not determine the final selection order.
The successful candidate must have an employment history demonstrating reliability and dependability; provide copies of certificates, diplomas or other documents as requested and/or required by law, including those establishing his/her right to work in the U. S.; pass a pre-employment medical examination which includes a drug and alcohol screen, and which is specific to the essential job functions and requirements. Pre-employment processing will also include an extensive background check and successful completion of a polygraph exam. (Does not apply to current full-time BART Police Department employees unless specific job requires additional evaluations).
If selected to proceed in the background investigative phase of the process, you will be asked to provide some essential documents. The following are some of the documents you may be asked to provide naturalization/citizenship papers, birth certificates, school transcripts, proof of selective service (men only), DMV driving history documents, proof of automobile insurance, marriage or divorce certificates (if applicable), and POST certificates (if applicable).
The selection process for this position will be in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Candidates that are unsuccessful in the selection process can immediately reapply online for future openings.
Internal BART employees who are unsuccessful in the selection process will have the right to a debriefing of their final interview assessment with Human Resources and if applicable a right to a formal grievance process.
Examples of DutiesPlans, organizes, assigns, directs, reviews and evaluates staff and activities during an assigned shift or in an assigned function.
Assists in developing goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards.
Assists in implementation of ordinances, rules and regulations to further departmental goals.
Performs duties and responsibilities consistent with the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics.
Maintains discipline and communicates and interprets policies and procedures to subordinates.
Is responsible for morale and productivity of assigned staff and monitors their training and professional development.
Ensures that subordinates respond to calls for service.
Performs varied police duties relating to the enforcement of law, investigation and prevention of crime, patrol, traffic control and community information.
Presents evidence in court.
Confers with and provides assistance to District staff and Police command staff.
Prepares and reviews a variety of reports, records, correspondence and other written materials.
Represents the District in meetings with other law enforcement agencies, professional, business and community organizations and the public.
Handles patron inquiries and community complaints.
Monitors developments related to police service procedures, techniques and equipment; recommends policy, procedural and equipment improvements.
Minimum QualificationsEducation :
Sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter units with major course work in administration of justice, business or public administration or a closely related field from an accredited college.
Experience :
The equivalent of four (4) years of (full-time equivalent) verifiable non-probationary sworn Police Officer experience by the filing deadline.
License or Certificate :
Must possess a valid Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Intermediate Certificate and to remain firearm qualified.
Substitution :
A valid POST Advanced certificate and twelve years of experience may be substituted for the education. A college degree is preferred.
Other Requirements :
- Must possess a valid, California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record
