Description
The County Counsel's Office serves as the civil legal advisor for the Board of Supervisors, County officials and departments, County boards and commissions, the Solano County Office of Education, the Solano County Grand Jury, schools, special districts and other public entities in the County. The County Counsel provides advice on a wide variety of legal matters ranging from the Americans with Disabilities Act to Zoning. The County Counsel's duties also include litigating civil actions on behalf of its public clients, and representing the County in juvenile dependency and conservatorship proceedings. The County Counsel's Office does not provide advice directly to members of the public.
Essential DutiesThe PositionThe Solano County Counsel’s Office is recruiting for a full time Deputy County Counsel I-IV. The ideal candidate will have experience in public law and will be expected to handle all aspects of advising and representing a public agency and its departments, boards, and commissions. They may be asked to prepare formal legal opinions, ordinances, resolutions, and other documents; analyze and draft contracts, leases, and other legal instruments; prepare pleadings; serve as counsel to hearing bodies; handle civil writ matters and other litigation; and participate in negotiations and administrative hearings. Attorneys applying for the position should highlight their training and experience in one or more of the following areas: business transactions including contract drafting and negotiating; environmental health and regulatory compliance; construction, procurement, and public works; public finance and taxation, or any other areas of public law.

The ideal candidate for the position will be articulate, energetic, and approachable, with exceptional analytical skills and professional judgment. Successful applicants must be able to relate well to colleagues, clients, and the courts, have the ability to think strategically and creatively, and have the ability to foster collaborative work relationships among stakeholders involved in negotiations.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS EXPERIENCE: Deputy County Counsel I (
$8,206.70 to $9,975.29/month*): No experience required; however, applicants must demonstrate possession of and competency in requisite knowledge and abilities.
Deputy County Counsel II (
$11,105.94 to $13,499.33/
month*): A minimum of six months of experience as a Deputy County Counsel I or its equivalent. One year of experience in the general practice of law may be substituted for the 6months of County Counsel experience.
Deputy County Counsel III (
$12,771.49 to $15,523.83/
month*): A minimum of one year of experience as a Deputy County Counsel II or its equivalent. Four years of experience in the general practice of law may be substituted for two years of County Counsel experience.
Deputy County Counsel IV (
$14,692.23 to $17,858.50/
month*): A minimum of one year of experience as a Deputy County Counsel III or its equivalent which demonstrates possession of and competency in requisite knowledge and abilities. Five years of experience in the general practice of law may be substituted for the three years of County Counsel experience.
*Note: salary includes 3% COLA increase effective 10/27/24SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Active membership in the California State Bar Association is required.*
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class C California driver's license may be required.
