THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT:
The Tustin Public Works Department is responsible for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of all public infrastructure and public right-of-way. A successful candidate will be reliable, willing to learn, and motivated to take on the tasks presented .
Incumbents will perform a variety of unskilled to semi-skilled manual labor tasks related to the maintenance and repair of the City's water distribution system. Positions at this level require no prior directly related Water Services experience and are trained in semi-skilled tasks that are related to their area of assignment.
Given that this is a part-time, at-will, non-benefitted position, hours will be limited to less than 1,000 hours per fiscal year. Hours worked may vary significantly from week to week.
THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS:

Those who are best qualified will be invited to participate in a panel interview. Those who pass the panel interview will earn placement on the eligible list, which may be used for current and future vacancies in the job classification.
This recruitment is conducted on a continuous basis to meet the needs of the City as vacancies occur and may close at any time.
Examples of DutiesAs a part-time Water Services Aide, incumbents will perform a wide variety of duties. Examples of these duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Removes and installs water meters
• Manually digs and backfills trenches and holes to facilitate installation and repair of water systems
• Locates, inspects, and investigates water lines and sources of leaks; assists in repairing leaks when necessary
• Assists in the installation, repair, and maintenance of various water system appurtenances, including pipes, mains, meters, and valves
• Responds to emergency calls for maintenance and repair activities
• Operates a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment; observes proper safety precautions and complies with Cal-OSHA personal and equipment safety regulations
• Operates motor vehicles in a safe manner
• Maintains and organizes work area to ensure a clean and safe working environment; maintains and cleans assigned vehicles, tools and equipment
• Completes basic activity records and reports
• Assists the public with directions, questions regarding City regulations, and other basic inquiries as needed
Minimum QualificationsA combination of education, experience, and training that has provided the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities is required for entry into the classification. A typical combination includes:
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from high school or equivalent; and six (6) months of experience in general maintenance work.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a Class C California driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
Receive satisfactory results from a background investigation, physical examination and administrative screening. May be required to work varying shifts outside of regular business hours (e.g., early morning, evenings, holidays, and weekends) and may be called to respond to emergencies outside of regular business hours.
Working Conditions & Physical DemandsWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to grasp, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The position primarily works in field settings. The employee must have the ability to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear. The position requires the ability to exert a moderate to extensive amount of physical effort involving stooping, crouching, climbing, kneeling, working in confined spaces, and lifting, carrying, or pushing equipment, tools, supplies and other materials typically weighing up to 60 pounds. The employee may be exposed to strong odors, smoke, strong and/or toxic chemicals, and loud noise in the performance of duties. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Employees do not receive health, retirement, or any other benefits unless otherwise required by law .
DEFERRED COMPENSATION In lieu of Social Security, e mployees are required to contribute 5.5% of salary on a pre-tax basis every pay period to an OBRA 457 deferred compensation plan. The City contributes an additional 2%, for a total combined contribution of 7.5%.
