WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEM MECHANIC
(Stationary Mechanic - Journey Level)

The Sanitation Districts clean the wastewater of over 5 million people and turn it into resources 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Through the operation of 11 wastewater treatment facilities, approximately 510 million gallons per day (MGD) of wastewater are treated at these facilities and 165 MGD are available for reuse. All of the water reclamation plants are strategically located throughout the County to maximize water reuse and to easily return the cleaned water to local waterways, storage reservoirs, or the Pacific Ocean.

We are now recruiting for a skilled Wastewater Treatment System Mechanic at our San Jose Creek Water Reclamation Plant . The essential functions of this position are to perform more skilled preventive repair and maintenance of stationary equipment and machinery in a wastewater treatment facility. Specialized mechanical machinery used includes, but is not limited to: turbines, boilers, stationary and mobile engines, blowers, various types of pumps such as gear, vane, centrifugal, vertical turbine, centrifugal and reciprocating air compressors, various types of gear boxes, and hydraulic systems.

Working hours are 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday - Friday. After hour, overtime, and weekend callbacks will sometimes be required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must possess a valid California Class C driver license; - AND - Four years performing directly-related skilled maintenance or craft duties involving the repair and overhaul of a variety of comparable machinery and equipment. Twelve semester units of college coursework or completion of one year of a two-year trade school in a mechanical technology or closely related program may be substituted for one year of the required experience; or graduation from a two-year trade school in a mechanical technology or closely related program may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

NOTE:

The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Class A or B California driver license within six (6) months of appointment. A crane certification from the State of California is also required. Crane certification involves attendance at training sessions, passing written and/or practical examinations and providing annual evidence of medical fitness. This training will be provided by the Districts and is mandatory for the individual who is selected for this position. In addition, the selected candidate must be medically cleared to wear a respiratory protection device and be able to pass a pulmonary function test annually. Incumbents must not wear contact lenses nor have facial hair that would prevent the safe and proper fit of self-contained breathing apparatus.

EXAMPLES OF ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The competitive selection process may cover: Knowledge of: Methods, materials and tools used in the repair of large and complex mechanical equipment such as engines, compressors and pumps and their operation; use of precision test equipment and tools; hand tools, welding and cutting equipment, pipe cutters and threaders, valve grinders and various saws; occupational hazards and safety regulations of the trade. The ability to: Diagnose and repair a wide variety of mechanical equipment; read, interpret and work from repair manuals and specifications; use specialized tools and equipment; and instruct apprentices in trade techniques.

RETIREMENT





COMPENSATION

Employees receive annual salary increases until reaching step 5 of the salary range and are provided with opportunities to promote. Cost of living adjustments are implemented annually in accordance with labor agreements.

TUITION REIMBURSEMENT
Employees may be eligible for tuition reimbursement for approved accredited course work.

STUDENT LOAN PAYMENT REIMBURSEMENT
For some bargaining units, the Districts will provide student loan payment reimbursements for principal or interest paid by the employee on a qualified education loan incurred by the employee for the education of the employee. The annual maximum reimbursement is $5,250 and the lifetime reimbursement limit is $21,000.
