Position Description: Job Description and Worker CharacteristicsPOSITION RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:- Under direction of the Shift Manager, maintains basic discipline and control of residents; ensures the safety and security of detention residents.
- Provides direct supervision to detention residents, thoroughly documenting resident behavior (e.g., conducts room checks on residents every 15 minutes and/or as directed
- observes residents in isolation.
- wakes residents and supervises during showering and other activities; oversees residents as they perform housekeeping or other tasks.
- assists in serving meals.
- ensures residents follow facility policies and procedures.
- enforces behavior management system, under supervision, issues warnings and disciplinary measures, as necessary.
- performs intake procedures for residents entering the facility (e.g., completes required forms; conducts searches; orients residents to the facility; issues clothing and linen; enters data in OJDYS system or other systems as required).
- operates control room and maintains security of the facility
(e.g., ensures doors are locked; monitors resident’s activities by observation and closed-circuit television system; operates control panel, to include but not limited to, opening doors; operating intercom system; screen incoming telephone calls; et al.); - prepares observation reports reflecting attitudes and behavior of residents; maintains logs regarding medication, incidents, incoming and outgoing telephone call; checks logs daily to identify problems documented from other shifts and keeps supervisor informed of problems identified.
- receives and discharges all residents in Detention.
- prepares routine records, reports, and files as required.
- patrols housing areas on scheduled and impromptu basis; moves residents from various locations within and outside the facility; maintains facility cleanliness.
- maintains a current working knowledge of Juvenile Detention standards and procedures; performs duties in resident property management, custodial services and safety inspections.
- ensures health, safety, and welfare of all residents, recording all findings; takes toxicology specimens as requested or authorized.
OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs other related duties as assigned; attends in-service training; must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license; demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.

Job Prerequisites: QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of High school diploma or GED; Must possess valid Ohio driver’s license; must be able to pass required background check, including drug and alcohol screening upon employment.
LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Valid Ohio Driver License; certified in First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) (upon employment).
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITES: (* indicates developed after employment)
Knowledge of: Center policies, procedures and regulations*; building and grounds security and safety procedures*; suicide prevention principles and practices; routine housekeeping practices; knowledge of adolescent concepts, group dynamics, institutional programming and principals of child/adolescent behavior preferred.
Ability to: Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; carry out a variety of instructions in written, oral, or picture form; develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor(s), associates, residents, court personnel, law enforcement, attorneys and the general public; strong ability to set priorities and maintain a schedule; be a team player; exercise sound judgment; maintain accurate records and documentation; safeguard information of a sensitive or confidential nature; recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action; prepare meaningful, concise, and accurate reports; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; physically restrain a resident as needed using approved and appropriate physical restraint techniques; engage in light to moderate physical activity for extended periods of time; ability to manage and supervise people; perform complex, non-standardized tasks requiring the application of numerous laws, rules, regulations and procedures.
Skill in: Use of appropriate security/safety equipment/devices; use of modern office equipment including computer; operating metal detectors*, operating two-way portable radios*; unarmed self- defense techniques; verbal de-escalation; mechanical and soft restraint application.
SPECIAL LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Must be certified in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) upon employment.
INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS: May be required to drive in adverse weather conditions; must be able to lift or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds; may be exposed to violent youths or youths under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs; may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids; may be required to intervene in fights; may be exposed to contagious or communicable diseases.
