ABOUT LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. DHS operates as an integrated health system, operating 25 health centers and 4 acute care hospitals, in addition to providing health care to youth in the juvenile justice system and inmates in the LA County jails. Across the network of DHS' directly operated clinical sites and through partnerships with community-based clinics, DHS cares for about 600,000 unique patients each year, employs over 23,000 employees, and has an annual operating budget of 6.9 billion dollars.
Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California (USC), and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition, to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings.
DEFINITION:Provides standard (set treatment plan) rehabilitative therapy and nursing treatment for patients with physical and/or cognitive disabilities.
Essential Job Functions- Assists/supervises patients in performing their activities of daily living, e.g., dressing, bathing, feeding, personal hygiene and household chores, including the use of appropriate adaptive equipment, and performs adaptive techniques appropriate for patients based on the treatment plan.
- Follows established bowel and bladder management programs, e.g., following planned bowel and bladder schedule and making appropriate interventions, within established parameters.
- Follows established training protocols for transfer by assisting the patients in the transfer, wheelchair mobility, and/or ambulation training of patients; implements behavioral and safety measures, such as use of supportive devices and restraints, and directs the patient in the sequence of a transfer.
- Explains the importance of and encourages the use of instructions already provided to patients/families on skin protection and inspection, safety, mobility, and use of equipment and adaptive techniques to improve function; responds to or refers their questions to appropriate staff.
- Encourages patients to perform in individual and group treatment activities, such as hand function, community skills, and leisure/recreational activities.
- Monitors and documents patients' and their families' ability to follow instructions in applying the prescribed treatment programs; promotes the importance of family participation in such programs.
- Assists patients with prescribed exercises designed to improve, restore, and maintain their strength, joint mobility, motor control, and/or cardiovascular endurance.
- Reinforces education provided to patients and families in the use of proper positioning techniques in order to maintain maximum function.
- Monitors and records patient physiological data, such as vital signs, intake and output, strength, velocity, and endurance as specified by the professional staff; reports result to the appropriate caregiver.
- Maintains a clean and orderly patient care environment observing appropriate infection control measures.
- Responds to patient call lights and notifies the appropriate caregiver of patients' needs; transports patients requiring monitoring or care for diagnostic tests or treatments.
- Understands basic principles of cushions, raises and other skin management techniques, and makes modifications within parameters or refers to appropriate therapist.
- Recognizes problems with assistive equipment and devices that lead to decreased function and intervenes within prescribed parameters or refers to appropriate therapist.
- Implements and monitors the weight/resistance programs established by the professional staff, including adjusting and increasing resistance, weight and range of movement within established parameters and according to patients' responses and physical tolerance.
- Contributes to patient treatment and discharge planning by suggesting scheduling changes, timing, patient/family readiness for learning to the professional staff.
- Collects specimens of urine, stool, and sputum for laboratory or diagnostic tests and documents according to established procedures.
Requirements SELECTION REQUIREMENTS :
1. Certification as a Nursing Assistant by the State of California. *
-AND-2. Current certification issued by the American Heart Association's Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) Program. **
-AND- 3. One year experience*** providing direct patient care services in a hospital, or in an outpatient setting (clinic or home health), or a skilled nursing facility.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS: *To compete in this examination process, applicants must have current certification as a Nursing Assistant by the State of California.
Required license(s) and/or certification(s) must be active and unrestricted, or your application will not be accepted. Additionally, in order to receive credit for license(s) and/or certification(s) in relation to any desirable qualifications, the license(s) and/ or certification(s) must be active and unrestricted. Applicants must ensure the License and Certification Section of the application is completed. Provide the title of your required certification, the certificate number, date of issue, date of expiration and the name of the issuing agency for the required certification as specified in the Selection Requirements.

PHYSICAL CLASS: IV - Arduous: Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION: ***Experience must be post-certification as a Nursing Assistant by the State of California.
Desirable Qualifications: Credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications:
- A Rehabilitation Therapy Technician Certification
- Experience in a rehabilitation hospital, an outpatient rehabilitation (physical or occupational therapy) facility, or Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility (IRF).
- Additional experience providing direct patient care services in a hospital, or in an outpatient setting, or a skilled nursing facility beyond the selection requirements.

at the time of filing or within 15 calendar days of filing your application online.Additional Information EXAMINATION CONTENT: This examination will consist of an evaluation of training and experience based upon application information, desirable qualifications, and supplemental questionnaire, weighted at 100%.
Candidates must meet the selection requirements and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on this examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.Notification Letters and other correspondences will be sent electronically to the email address provided on the application. ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION: Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade on the examination will be placed on the eligible register and will appear in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility.
No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months. AVAILABLE SHIFTS: Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
