Who We Are:
The Internal Services Department (ISD) plays a major role in supporting all County of Los Angeles departments and commissions. With an annual budget of over $885 million and 2,162 budgeted positions along with over 5,120 contracted workers of varying professions in facilities management, information technology, environmental, administrative, purchasing and contracting, ISD is the County's trusted partner and provider of choice.

The Opportunity:
We are pursuing a qualified candidate to fill a Sheet Metal Worker position in the Maintenance and Operations Division. The position p erforms journey-level sheet metal installation, fabrication, assembly and repair work.

Positions allocable to this class typically report to a Sheet Metal Supervisor and uses a variety of hand tools and power equipment in the installation, fabrication, assembly and repair of sheet metal articles and equipment. Incumbents are required to have a working knowledge of the sheet metal operation, sufficient to independently perform all the essential elements of work common to the fabrication and repair of sheet metal articles and equipment, and sufficient to train and provide technical supervision for apprentices and helpers.

Essential Job Functions

Essential Job Functions:
Installs and maintains chain link and wrought iron fencing.

Installs and repairs hollow metal steel doors and door accessories.

Performs preventative maintenance on exhaust fans.

Operates Sheet Metal shop machinery (i.e. shears, breaks, iron worker, notcher, drill press, welders, etc.).

Works with other crafts on the installation and repair of Sheet Metal articles.

Fabricates or repairs such sheet metal articles as roofing, gutters, flashing, louvers, ventilators, ducts, hoods, sinks, steam tables, trays, lockers, shelves, fire doors and metal windows.

Fabricates signs, ducts, vessels, etc., from sheet metal.

Lays out, cuts, shapes and constructs articles of sheet metal, including black and galvanized iron and steel, tin, copper, brass, zinc, and stainless steel.

Transfers patterns from blueprints to metal, using scale, compass, divider, prick punch and other layout tools.

Punches or drills holes for rivets, bolts or metal screws.

Solders, welds and brazes.

Grinds and files seams, joints and rough surfaces; burrs and turns edges.

Maintains tools and equipment.

Supervise apprentices and helpers as needed.

Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites in order to transport the necessary tools, equipment, and materials required to perform the job.

Requirements

Requirements to Qualify:
Option I: Completion of a recognized apprenticeship training program* in sheet metal work of at least four years duration

Option II: Five years' experience in sheet metal work in the building trades, three years of which must have been at the journey-level.**

** Journey-level experience is defined as possessing the required knowledge, skills, and training to perform sheet metal work using a variety of hand tools and power equipment in the installation, fabrication, assembly and repair of sheet metal articles and equipment. Incumbents are required to have a working knowledge of the sheet metal operation, sufficient to independently perform all the essential elements of work common to the fabrication and repair of sheet metal articles and equipment, and sufficient to train and provide technical supervision for apprentices and helpers.

License:
A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.

Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant’s driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.

Physical Expectations:
3 - Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10 - 25 pounds.

Special Requirement Information:
* Apprenticeship training programs must be recognized by a national, global, or regional accrediting agency, the California State Department of Education, the California State Department of Labor Division of Apprenticeship Standards, or the Council for Private Post Secondary and Vocational Education.

Additional Information

Our Assessment Process:

This examination will consist of three (3) parts:

Part I - An Evaluation of Training and Experience based on application information and desirable qualifications weighted at 20%.

Part II - A multiple choice test weighted at 60% covering: Building Maintenance, Plans and Drawings, Mechanical Concepts - Basic, Sheet Metal Methods and Concepts, Inspection of Buildings, Drafting, and Safety on the Job.

Note: The Multiple-Choice Test is a standardized test and not subject to review by candidates per Civil Service Rule 7.19.

Part III - A Sheet Metal Performance Test weighted at 20% which includes laying out a pattern using one of the three methods of pattern development (parallel line, radial line or triangulation).

You must achieve a score of 70% or higher on both parts of the assessment in order to be placed on the Eligible Register.

Eligibility Information:


The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the assessment will be placed on the Eligible Register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation. Passing this examination and being placed on the Eligible Register do not guarantee an offer of employment.

Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

No person may compete for this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.
