DEFINITION:
Supervises professional and support personnel in the provision of pharmacy services in a hospital, clinic, correctional facility, or other health care setting.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
Positions allocable to this class receive general supervision from higher-level professional pharmacy staff, and are distinguished by their responsibility to provide first-leveladministrative and technical supervision over professional and support pharmacy personnel in the provision of pharmacy services, which include ordering, compounding, dispensing, packaging, storing, and distributionand control of drugs and other pharmaceutical products. Positions also supervise licensed personnel providing expert information and consultation on drugs and drug usage to staff and patients in a dispensing or clinical setting. Incumbents plan and implement pharmacy operations and procedures within the general framework of established facility procedures and professional standards, resolve day-to-day issues related to appropriate use of drugs, coordinate pharmacy services with other patient care activities, and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements. Incumbents must exercise knowledge of the principles of supervision governing personnel administration to plan, direct, and review work of staff.

Essential Job Functions

Establishes, maintains, and revises unit pharmacy procedures, work standards, and quality control measures within the general framework of pharmacy and hospital procedures and established professional standards; monitors quality and quantity of production and takes corrective action as necessary.
Interviews and selects or recommends the selection of professional and other pharmacy personnel; orients and trains new employees;plans, assigns, and evaluates the work of subordinates; handles first-level grievances; counsels employees regarding work performance, and recommends disciplinary action when indicated; and,interprets and applies personnel and other administrative policies in supervising pharmacy operations.

Schedules and assigns staff to provide pharmacy services on one or more shifts and adjusts assignments in accordance with workload demands, availability, and capabilities of staff.

Provides technical guidance and administrative support to staff in the interpretation and enforcement of policies and procedures designed to promote appropriate use of pharmaceutical products; evaluates and makes recommendations on proposed changes to the facility's drug formulary.

Coordinates the work of the pharmacy staff with the work of medical, nursing, corrections,and other patient care staff through meetings, conferences and development of procedures designed to enhance cooperation in the provision of pharmacy-related patient care services; conducts studies and recommends improvements in methods of ordering, compounding, dispensing, packaging, storing, or distributing drugs and other pharmaceuticals; recommends solutions to problems of staffing, space, security, equipment, and service levels.

Supervises or performs the ordering of drugs, supplies and equipment to maintain the ongoing operation of a dispensing or clinical pharmacy unit; consults withmanufacturers' representatives regarding new drugs or equipment.

Participates in planning and implementing information systems for recording and maintaining data on drug usage and costs.

Designs and maintains internal controls to meet all regulatory requirements for the receipt, storage, dispensing, and disposition of narcotics and other controlled or restricted drugs and enforces appropriate security and accountability measures; drafts related policies, procedures, and protocols.

Supervises and participates in the orientation and training of pharmacy students, pharmacy interns, clerks, support personnel, pharmacy technician trainees, and other professional and technical staff in pharmaceutical principles, practices, operations, and regulatory standards.

Performs direct pharmacy services on an ongoing or relief basis, as needed.

Prepares budget requests for the unit, as needed.

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

One year of experience as a Registered Pharmacist.

LICENSE:
A current license to practice as a Registered Pharmacist issued by the California State Board of Pharmacy.

A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation may be required when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS:
Physical Class II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience as a clinical pharmacist

Experience in pharmacy administration.

Completion of a pharmacy residency or fellowship program.

Additional Information

EXAMINATION CONTENT : This examination will consist of an evaluation of experience weighted 100%. The evaluation of experience will be based on application information and desirable qualifications submitted on the supplemental application form at the time of filing.

CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE LIST.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION: The names of candidates receiving a passing score in this examination will be placed on the eligible list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.
