LIFEGUARD/SWIM INSTRUCTOR I, II, and SENIORAQUATICS PROGRAMThe City of Concord's Recreation Services Department is seeking people to work for the City's Aquatics Program. Salary is negotiable based on experience:
- Lifeguard/Swim Instructor I: $17.22 - $18.09/hour, with no experience
- Lifeguard/Swim Instructor II: $18.54 - $19.48/hour, with a minimum of 2 seasons experience
- Senior Lifeguard/Swim Instructor: $19.97 - $20.98/hour, with a minimum of 3 seasons experience
The Aquatics Program:The Concord Community Pool at 3501 Cowell Rd is one of the City’s most popular facilities, serving approximately 124,000 swimmers per year in our award winning learn to swim classes, our lap swim, recreational swim and water exercises programs, as well as serving as a place for many swim teams to practice. The pool is open year round, heated to a comfortable 80 degrees, and is 50 meters in length. The pool also boasts heated changing rooms and showers.
What you will be doing: Under supervision, Lifeguard/Swim Instructors perform a variety of duties for the purpose of providing for water safety at Concord Community Pool. This includes organizing, coordinating, conducting, and instructing courses in water safety as well as supervision of the Concord Community Pool.
The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor I is distinguished from the Lifeguard/Swim Instructor II in that the II performs duties independently. Senior Lifeguard/Swim Instructors perform additional leadership duties, including scheduling and training of other lifeguards.
All positions are part time, limited service, and m ust be able to work a minimum of 20 hours a week, early morning, evening and weekend shifts when required, and attend weekly in-service trainings. They must also be able to successfully complete Lifeguard Training provided by the City of Concord.
SELECTION PROCESS

Please attach copies of relevant certificates to your application.All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, and those candidates demonstrating the strongest qualifications for the position will be invited to interview.Successful candidates will be provided a conditional offer of employment and must successfully complete a fingerprint check (more information below), TB testing, and the City's Lifeguard Training (regardless of past experience). The Lifeguard Training requires participants to swim 300 yards continuously (100 yards Freestyle, 100 yards Breaststroke, 100 yard either Freestyle or Breaststroke), retrieve a 10-pound diving brick from a depth of 13 feet, and tread water for 2 minutes without the use of hands.
Conviction History: If you receive a conditional job offer, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you have received a conditional job offer. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances. Examples of duties include, but are not limited to- Perform the tasks necessary to promote public safety at an aquatic facility by Lifeguarding.
- Monitor activities to prevent accidents: enforces facility rules, cautions swimmers regarding unsafe swimming activities, rescues non swimmers and administers first aid.
- Develop, organize, and instruct beginning, intermediate, and advanced swimming classes for all ages.
- Inspect and maintain equipment and materials to ensure they are in proper working order. Report issues to appropriate staff.
- Take reports from the public; fill out incident reports, training logs and other forms and paperwork as required.
- Participate in weekly in-service training sessions.
- Other duties as assigned.
In addition to the above Senior Lifeguard/Swim Instructors may also:
- Assist in the determination of shift assignments.
- Help lead weekly in-service training sessions.
- Provide additional oversight of classes as needed.
- Other leadership duties as assigned.
QualificationsKnowledge of:- Current and preventative lifeguarding techniques.
- Rules and regulations of an aquatic facility.
- Swimming rescue techniques, C.P.R., and first aid.
- Instruction techniques and materials related to aquatic activities.
Ability to:- Swim with proficiency and endurance.
- Maintain lifeguard certification.
- Prevent accidents and effect rescues.
- Enforce the rules and regulations of an aquatic facility.
- Perform swimming rescues, C.P.R., and first aid.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with other employees and the public.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Prepare, read, and write various reports.
- Instruct students in a variety of aquatic oriented skill level classes.
LIFEGUARD/SWIM INSTRUCTOR IExperience: None. Previous lifeguarding or competitive swim experience is highly desirable.
Certification: None required at time of hire. Must be able to pass City's Lifeguard Training and Certification Program as a condition of employment (minimum age of 15 required).
LIFEGUARD/SWIM INSTRUCTOR IIExperience: Two seasons (equivalent to 5 months or more) of lifeguarding, swim instructor, or swim coach experience is required.
Certification: Valid/current lifeguarding certifications are desirable. Must be able to pass the City's Lifeguard Training as a condition of employment.
SENIOR LIFEGUARD/SWIM INSTRUCTORExperience: Three seasons (equivalent to 7.5 months or more) of lifeguarding, swim instructor, or swim coach experience is required.
Certification: Valid/current lifeguarding certifications are desirable. Must be able to pass the City's Lifeguard Training as a condition of employment.
OtherA valid California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment for select positions. Must successfully clear TB testing and fingerprint check.
