Classification Salary Range: Step 5 at $6,720 - Step 22 at $9,909 per month

The anticipated hiring range for this position is Step 13 at $8,067.

About the Department/Position:

Under the direction of the commanding officer, the Sergeant is assigned primary responsibility as a working first-line supervisor to general law enforcement and specialized work assignments performed by Police Officers and Corporals. Work assignments require the use of independent judgment and the ability to provide leadership to others. The Sergeant rank is distinguished from the Corporal by the full-time assignment of supervisory duties, including creating work assignments, monitoring and reporting work activities, and providing on-the-job training and assistance to subordinates.

Special Working Conditions: Shifts work on a rotating 12-hour schedule. Frequent overtime due to court attendance and special details. Subject to emergency call-back conditions.

Specialized Materials:
Uses police vehicle, firearms, computer, surveillance equipment, evidence processing equipment, and general knowledge of various types of equipment that police officers come in contact with on a regular basis

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities:

• Plan, assign and supervise assigned staff on a shift, task force, or unit on a regular basis.
• Develop, implement and enforce campus and department policies, procedures, and regulations within the assigned area of responsibility.
• Provide on-the-job training, development, and evaluation to assigned staff.
• May assume command in the absence of the superior officer and assist in administrative duties.
• Participate in the development and implementation of department policies and procedures.
• Assume the role of designated Watch Commander or Officer in Charge
• Act as a team leader on a particular investigation task force or project. Examples include critical response unit, special evidence discovery, and evaluation team, field training, defensive tactics instruction, crime prevention, and community relations programs.
• Provides roll call training on topics of importance to the watch.
• Qualifies with Departmentally authorized weapons on a regular basis.
• Meets all POST training mandates for a Supervisory role
• Reviews and approves field reports. Ensures reports accurately describe events as they occur or as they are described. This includes accident diagrams or crime scenes as needed and requires knowledge of computer operations.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) academy and a P.O.S.T.
• Intermediate certificate are required in addition to three (3) or more years of active law enforcement experience.
• Possession of P.O.S.T. Supervisory Certificate or the ability to obtain one within (2) years of appointment.
• Valid CA Drivers License

Preferred Qualifications:

• A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution with coursework in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or a related field is preferred.
• Possession of an Advanced P.O.S.T certificate is highly desirable.
• Minimum (2) years of prior supervisory experience in the form of formal supervisor, team leader, or acting supervisory roles.
