Description

The City of Foster City is looking for an experienced Associate Engineer with a passion for public service. This position will provide exposure to small-scale and large-scale projects, program management, internal collaboration, and community engagement. The position performs engineering work on the following types of capital improvement projects: City facilities, parks, levee, storm water systems, lagoon, streets, traffic signals, water distribution systems, and wastewater collection systems.

We are seeking highly qualified engineering professionals who possess the technical expertise and sound judgment necessary to address complex challenges with confidence and professionalism. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in areas such as land development, water and wastewater utility systems, lagoon systems, transportation and traffic engineering, and storm system management. It is essential that the candidate should have independent project management experience from project conception to completion (ex. scope and budget development, project design, construction management, and closeout) and be able to manage a wide variety of projects simultaneously while developing and maintaining positive and effective working relations with others. Demonstrated competency with AutoCAD and GIS is strongly preferred.

Education and Experience
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education : Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a directly related field.

Experience : Three (3) years of professional experience in civil engineering work including project design, plan checking, and project management.

Licenses and Certifications

• Possession of a valid Certificate of Registration as a Civil Engineer in the State of California is desirable, but is not required.

Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job related qualifications. Based upon a review of employment applications and supplemental questionnaires received, a limited number of the qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process.

The process will consist of an Oral Panel Interview. An eligibility list will be established from those who pass the examination process with a score of 70% or higher. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least one year unless exhausted sooner.

The department will invite the most qualified candidates from the eligibility list to a final department interview. The Public Works department will make the hiring decision.

Expected Dates for Examinations (subject to change):
Oral Panel Interview: December 2026 (exact date TBD)
Department Interview: December 2026 (exact date TBD)

Note: Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee that a candidate will be invited to participate in the selection process. The City of Foster City reserves the right, at its discretion, to limit the number of qualified candidates invited to the selection process.
