Summary
Deputy Sheriff
Under the direction of the Chief Deputy, the Deputy Sheriff is responsible for enforcing all federal, state and local laws, statutes, and ordinances within the County to serve and protect citizens of the County and to promote public safety. Duties of the Deputy Sheriffinclude such major responsibilities as patrolling assigned portions of the County; enforcing laws and regulations and issuing traffic citations; serving civil process papers; responding to civil or criminal complaints, disturbances or emergency assistance; assisting in the conduct of various criminal and civil investigations; locating and executing arrest/search warrants; transporting persons per court orders; providing court security; and providing assistance and response to natural disasters, homeland security or hazardous chemical/materials spills.
Duties/Responsibilities
Patrols areas of the County enforcing traffic laws, providing security and enforcement of traffic laws.
- Enforces all laws and regulations and issues traffic citations.
- Responds to traffic accidents, investigates accidents (e.g. interviews drivers, passengers, witnesses; takes pictures and measurements, draws diagrams), determines if violations of statutes occurred, prepares incident reports.
- Patrols county roads and highways to observe motorists, issues citations or warnings enforcing traffic laws.
- Conducts security checks of public and private facilities.
Investigates and responds to calls, civil and criminal complaints, disturbances, or requests for emergency assistance.
- Responds to medical emergencies. Provides first aide and care until advanced life support arrives. Assists fire departments and ambulance services with emergencies, traffic control and rescue work.
- Responds to civil and criminal complaints or disturbances.
- Determines if a crime has been committed and what enforcement activity is required, if any.
- Makes probable cause arrests, if indicated and transports individuals to jail.
- Controls scenes to ensure safety.
- Responds to natural disasters, hazardous material incidents and homeland security matters.
- Conducts on scene investigation and collects evidence.
- Secures crime scenes.
- Conducts searches for drowning victims in all waters located in the County.
- Assists in the conduct of missing person searches.
Serves and executes civil process papers, precepts and orders in accordance with state and federal law. Pursues and executes arrest warrants including probation violators and other persons wanted by the court. Serves warrants in accordance with department policies, state, and federal mandates and regulations.
Transports mentally ill and intoxicated persons to state and private facilities pursuant to orders of the court.
Provides court security during criminal and civil trials. Transports prisoners to and from court and/or to other facilities, as required.
Maintains all department equipment used in the performance of the job and ensures their proper working order.
Prepares incident and investigative reports and complaints. Appears in court to certify regarding law enforcement procedures, actions and incidents.
Incumbents of this position are relied upon for providing credible, accurate, and effective testimony in court and elsewhere. It is of utmost importance that persons in this position conduct themselves in a manner that does not cause concern regarding their ability to be able to provide credible, accurate, and effective testimony.
Employees must consistently report to work as scheduled and maintain regular attendance
Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as required.
Keeps abreast of changing legislation, trends, training requirements, policies, and developments in areas of responsibility.
May serve on special task forces or assignments, as delegated.
Minimum Requirements
Two-Year AA Degree in corrections, law enforcement, criminal justice, criminology, behavior/social science, or related field.is required.
Valid Minnesota Peace Officer License is required. No previous law enforcement experience beyond licensure requirement.
Valid Minnesota Driver's License is required
Other training and certifications may required by Department after hire.

Physical requirements associated with the position can be best summarized as follows: Heavy Work : Exerting up to 100+ pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Unusual or hazardous working conditions related to performance of duties: Driving in extreme weather conditions, working around traffic on roadways; working under time pressure constraints, stress and risks associated with potential life threatening situations, assaultive and combative subjects, and bodily fluids. Work requires constant attention to safety procedures, proper law enforcement practices and techniques.

Job Description
Deputy Sheriff
