Description
IntroductionMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSThe following qualifications are required subject to compliance with Title 16 of the California Code of Regulations section 1366.3.
Education: Completion of an approved Medical Assistant training program.
Special Requirement: Depending on the nature of assignment, some positions may require one or more of the following: 1) Basic Life Support Certification for Healthcare Providers, 2) California Vaccines for Children by California Department of Public Health, and/or 3) Limited Phlebotomy Technician certificate issued by the California Department of Public Health.
License: Possession of a valid California driver's license, depending upon the nature of the assignment.
KNOWLEDGEMedical (clinic) procedures and practices; basic physiology, anatomy and psychology; basic patient registration, records and charting procedures; unlicensed assistive practices; medical terminology; medical supplies; basic computer and modern office automation technology and computer software programs relevant to department operations; basic public relations.
ABILITYSet up and maintain clerical functions of a medical clinic; take patient vital signs; learn and perform unlicensed assistive duties for licensed providers; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; operate computers, office equipment and related software; maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of professional staff, coworkers, patients and the general public.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTSMobility-frequent operation of a data entry device; frequent standing and walking; frequent sitting, pushing/pulling and bending/squatting; occasional moderate to heavy equipment operation; running; climbing stairs; Lifting-frequent lifting of 30 lbs. or less; frequent lifting of 30 to 70 lbs.; occasional lifting of 70 lbs. or more; occasional restraining, lifting/turning of heavy objects or people; Vision-frequent reading and other close up work; frequent need for color perception, hand/eye coordination, depth perception and use of peripheral vision; Dexterity-frequent holding, reaching, grasping, writing and need for repetitive motion; Hearing/Talking-frequent need to hear normal speech and faint sounds; frequent talking on the telephone and in person; occasionally speaking over public address system; Emotional/Psychological-frequent exposure to trauma, grief and death; frequent public contact, decision making and concentration required; Special Requirements: may require working nights, weekends, and overtime; Environmental-occasional exposure to hazardous materials; frequent exposure to noise.

Hours Restrictions: Please be advised that SEIU bargaining unit employees are limited to 1,559 hours on payroll each calendar year.
Selection ProceduresApplicants for part-time and temporary recruitments who meet the minimum qualifications are either referred to the hiring department for further selection or they may be required to take a written examination. If a written examination is given, the top candidates may be referred to the hiring department for further selection.

Physical Exam : Some classifications require physical examinations. Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the physical examination. The County pays for physical examinations administered in its medical facilities.
Pre-employment Drug Screening Exam: Some classifications require a new employee successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen as a condition of employment. Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the drug screen. The County pays for the initial drug screen.
Employment of Relatives: Applicants who are relatives of employees in a department within the 3rd degree of relationship, (parent, child, grandparent, grandchild or sibling) either by blood or marriage, may not be appointed, promoted, transferred into or within the department when:
- They are related to the Appointing Authority, or
- The employment would result in one of them supervising the work of the other
Department Heads may establish additional limitations on the hiring of relatives by departmental rule.
