WIC Nutritionist

Purpose:

Under close supervision, this position provides the delivery of health nutrition’s services for designated clinic.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

Delivers group and individual nutrition and breastfeeding education according to agency approved Nutrition Education Plan.

Performs participant income and health screenings, including obtaining ID, residency, and health history; measuring height, weight and length of WIC client; plotting on growth grid; calculating income and BMI; performing finger stick; and determining conditions of nutritional need.

Prescribes supplemental food package, assess need for breastfeeding pumps and supplies, and issues in accordance with Federal, State and Local policies and procedures.

Screens immunization record to obtain immunization status.

Refers participants to appropriate community, health and human service resources as needed.

Issues and maintains inventory of returned formula, breast pumps and supplies, and educational material according to policy.

Participates in assigned health fairs, community events and projects and makes presentations to groups as assigned.

Prepares bulletin boards with nutrition messages according to agency approved Nutrition Education Plan.

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

• Knowledge of Federal, State, City, and Local policies and regulations that pertain to WIC services.
• Knowledge of principles and practice of nutrition, breastfeeding physiology, anatomy, and counseling techniques.
• Knowledge of public health programs, social services and client needs.
• Skill in providing nutrition and breastfeeding education and excellent customer service and support.
• Skill in handling multiple tasks, organizing and prioritizing.
• Skill in using computers and related software applications.
• Ability to work with frequent interruptions.
• Ability to communicate information and ideas, effectively, clearly and concisely with others.
• Ability to interact effectively and professionally with persons from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, education, racial, ethnic and professional backgrounds; managers, co-workers, and members of the public and professional groups.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a field related to Food and Nutrition.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

• Valid Class C Texas Driver License.
• Completion of all required WIC modules during the probationary period.

Preferred Qualifications:

Customer service skills

Bilingual in English and Spanish
Ability to work outside of 8 AM- 5 PM, and some weekends
Experience communicating effectively and teaching classes
Proficiency in using computer applications

Salary and Benefits:

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. This position comes with a comprehensive benefits package consisting of medical and dental coverage, paid sick , vacation, and personal time, and a retirement plan.

• Salary Range is $23.76 - $27.32

Physical Work Location:

Bastrop WIC (Mon/Tues/Thurs/Fri): 605 Old Austin Hwy, Bastrop, TX 78602

Elgin WIC Wednesdays: 218 S Main St, Elgin, TX 78621

Hours:

Monday - Friday 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM Lunch: 12:00PM - 1:00PM

Hours may vary due to position type and operational needs . Evenings and weekends may be required on occasion, especially during an emergency response.

Grant Funded Position

• This position is grant-funded, meaning its financial support comes from allocated funds that may be modified, reduced, or canceled at the discretion of the City of Austin or the grant provider.
  

Immunization Requirement:

Austin Public Health employees must comply with the department’s immunization policy.

Travel:

This position may require travel to multiple work locations.
