Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

• Pick up litter and service restrooms.
  
• Perform grounds keeping and grounds maintenance tasks.
  
• Operate hand tools.
  
• Operate power tools.
  
• Assemble and dismantle portable stages and seating arrangements.
  
• Perform routine cleaning of facilities.
  
• Operates vehicles.
  
• Assist the public with questions/concerns.
  
• Assist with graffiti or paint removal.
  

Responsibilities - Supervision and/or Leadership Exercised:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

• Knowledge of general grounds keeping processes, policies and procedures within the Parks and Recreation Department.
  
• Knowledge of equipment used in grounds keeping or other related work.
  
• Knowledge of minor construction.
  
• Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.
  
• Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  
• Skill in oral and written communication.
  
• Skill in planning and organizing.
  
• Ability to operate power tools.
  
• Ability to lift and carry equipment or materials applicable to the assigned work.
  
• Ability to read and follow floor plan sketches and diagrams.
  
• Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
  
• Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public.
  

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must have one (1) year of experience in the assigned area.
  

Licenses or Certifications:

• None.
  

Preferred Experience:

• Experience related to grounds maintenance and landscaping functions including mowing, edging, trimming, planting, watering, tree maintenance for a botanical garden, park, or park-like setting.
  
• Experience using hand tools, powers tools, and other maintenance equipment including tractors, riding mowers, push mowers, trimmers, backhoes, power tools, and hand tools.
  
• Experience installing and/or repairing irrigation systems.
  

Preferred Skills:

• Knowledge of insect pests, plant diseases, and nutrient deficiencies.
  
• Knowledge of techniques and practices for propagating, planting, and maintaining trees, shrubs, bedding plants, and ground covers.
  

Other:

• Ability to travel to more than one work location.

The purpose of the Seasonal - General Maintenance Worker I position is to perform routine grounds maintenance and landscaping functions, including mowing, edging, and trimming of grounds and park land areas at the Zilker Botanical Garden. This includes planting, watering, weeding, and maintaining trees, shrubs, and bedding plants.

In addition, this position will learn about the installation and operation of irrigation systems, irrigation controllers, irrigation system layouts, and backflow principles.

• Physical Requirements: Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying, or using a force equal to lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Must be physically and mentally able to work with participants adapting to a variety of conditions such as daily walking, hiking, climbing, standing, balancing, kneeling, stooping, running, bending, crawling, swimming, stretching and reaching in rugged terrain. Tolerate loud noise associated with enthusiasm and excitement. Ability to work outside in all types of weather and/or inclement conditions, and in confined spaces.

Salary:

$22.05 per hour

Work Schedule Notes:

• Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
  
• Work schedule and location is subject to change based on department needs and programs.
  
• May be required to work during special events, evenings, and holidays.
  
• May be required to work during city emergencies such as extreme weather events.
