About the DepartmentThe Finance Department is currently seeking to hire one (1) Student Intern in the Accounting division. If you are interested in this position, please apply!
The mission of the Finance Department is to manage, protect, and report on City of San José financial resources to enhance the City’s financial condition for residents, businesses, and investors.
The Finance Department has five core divisions:
- Accounting
- Administration
- Debt & Treasury Management
- Purchasing & Risk Management
- Revenue Management
The Finance Department works in partnership with the departments of Human Resources, Information Technology, and Public Works as the City’s Strategic Support City Service Area to effectively develop, manage, and safeguard City fiscal, physical, technological, and human resources to enable and enhance the delivery of City services and projects. The Finance Department has a $27.4 million operating budget and 128 budgeted full-time equivalent (FTE) positions.
Position DutiesThe Department of Finance has an immediate need for a Student Intern to provide basic support for a special project focused on the escheatment of unclaimed property. This includes assisting with ensuring compliance with City procedures and the California Government Code and helping to support payees in the process of claiming funds.
The intern will also provide limited assistance in the effort to convert vendor payments from paper checks to ACH/direct deposit by helping with basic review of payment information and supporting vendor outreach activities aimed at improving efficiency and reducing escheatment volume.
In addition to other tasks within the Student Intern classification, the role will also provide basic support to Accounts Payable with audit-related activities, such as helping retrieve and organize supporting documentation from the City’s fiscal management system.
Minimum QualificationsEducation and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to completion of high school and current enrollment in an accredited college or university in undergraduate or graduate program.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the state of California may be required in performing job duties.
Other QualificationsThe Student Intern is also expected to possess the following additional qualifications and key abilities:
- Must have a willingness to learn and apply their academic training to the required job assignments
- Knowledge and ability to use computers and related applications
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to carry out oral instructions
- Ability to carry out written instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
The selection process will consist of an evaluation of the applicant’s education and qualifications, including any combination equivalent to completion of high school and current enrollment in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate or graduate program, as reflected in the application materials. Those that proceed will be invited to proceed in the selection process which will consist of a Zoom interview. Following the interview, the selected candidate will be required to complete a Live Scan background check. The anticipated hire date is June 22, 2026.

Part-time positions(less than 40 hours per week) are required to participate in the City’s PTC 457 Deferred Compensation Plan per Federal regulations. Employees are required to contribute 3.75% of gross earning and the City contributes a matching amount of 3.75%. The funds contributed by the City are 100% vested upon initial deferral and will be held in a stability of principal investment. This plan is in lieu of social security and does not include any healthcare benefits or contributions.
Part-time employees may elect to contribute additional retirement savings through the City’s Voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. Additional Information on both plans can be found on the
